DOVER, Del. – Joe Callahan threw for five touchdowns and 339 yards, all in the first half to lead the 4th-ranked Wesley College football team to a 47-7 victory over Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Scott D. Miller Stadium. The Wolverines improve to 4-0 on the year while their future NJAC rival falls to 0-3.
Callahan needed just 14 completions to generate his totals for the day, attempting just 18 on the day. Junior tight end Kyle George caught half of Callahan's passes, one short of a career-high, which went for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Steve Koudossou also went over the century mark with three grabs for 115 yards while Robert Wiggs and Andrew Monaghan also had touchdown grabs.
With five passing touchdowns today, Callahan now has 43 in his career which ties Jimmy Connolley ('94) for fifth on Wesley's all-time list.
All of the scoring for both teams came in the first half with Brandon Wright putting the Wolverines on the board first with a 1-yard run with 7:12 left in the first quarter. Wright's score capped off a nine play drive that traveled 75 yards. George came up with two big grabs of 21 and 24 yards during the possession.
Joe Brown forced a pair of incomplete passes on SVU's ensuing possession to force a punt and Callahan was quick to make the Knights pay with a 44-yard strike to Wiggs for a score.
Southern Virginia scored a touchdown with 33 seconds left in the third but it was all Wolverines from there as they needed just one play, an 80-yard bomb from Callahan to a wide-open Koudossou to make the score 20-7 with 15 seconds left in the opening quarter.
To start the second quarter, Jordan Wescott, who had a team-high eight tackles, sacked quarterback Mitch Stevenson and forced a fumble which was recovered by Brenton Barnes. Barnes returned the fumble 38 yards to SVU's 17-yardline before Jamar Baynard plowed into the endzone from one yard out.
After forcing another punt, Callahan completed 4-of-5 passes for 84 yards on the next Wesley possession before hitting George for a 41-yard touchdown.
The Knights mustered just two yards on its next drive before a punt which was blocked by Francis Massally who leaped over a wall of three SVU players. Wesley took over at Knights' 15 and Callahan found George in the corner of the endzone with 2:24 left in the half.
Callahan then completed passes to George for 19 yards and Wiggs for 16 before the Knights called a timeout with nine seconds remaining to setup their defense. The stoppage did not matter as Callahan found Monaghan in the far corner of the endzone for his fifth touchdown pass of the day.
Wesley totaled 515 total yards of offense (160 rushing) and allowed just 253 (41 rushing) on the day.
Defensively, the Wolverines recorded six sacks, three of which were by senior Aamir Petrose and another 1.5 by Roderick Caine. Wescott matched Petrose with three tackles for loss.
Louisiana College makes the trip to Dover for Wesley's Homecoming on Saturday, October 4 in a 1 pm kickoff.
