UMHB rolls over Kean 73-7

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team exploded in the second quarter and put together its best all-around performance of the season as the 2nd-ranked Cru rolled past Kean University 73-7 Saturday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 4-0 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Cougars to 0-3 on the year.

 

The Cru lost fumbles in Kean territory on both of its first two possessions before shifting into high gear late in the first quarter. Zach Anderson hit Wykeyhe Walker for a 33-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and Hunter Schmidt added a 15-yard scoring run on a reserve to make it 14-0 UMHB at the end of the first quarter. After Kean failed to convert a fake punt, Dustin Frye capped a drive with a four-yard touchdown run. A Cougar fumble led to Anderson's 12-yard scoring strike to Kamray Runnels, the Cru blocked a punt to set up Duane Thompson's four-yard scoring run, Blake Jackson hit Runnels for a 58-yard catch-and-run for another TD, a Kean fumble led to Jacob O'Neill's 18-yard field goal and Michael Carpenter added a one-yard scoring run to make it 52-0 UMHB at the half.

 

Jackson had a 26-yard scoring run on UMHB's first drive in the second half to push it to 59-0. The Cougars put points on the board on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Charles Vellis to Dante Burton, but the Cru added Thompson's five-yard TD run and a 13-yard touchdown run from William Mathews to provide the final margin.

 

UMHB rolled up 615 yards of total offense, including 352 on the ground. Kean managed just 131 yards of total offense in the contest and turned the ball over three times.

 

Thompson led the Cru with 59 rushing yards as 12 different players carried the ball for UMHB. Anderson threw for 190 yards and two scores and Walker caught four passes for 73 yards and Runnels had two grabs for 70 yards and a pair of scores. Brian Sides and Baylor Mullins had seven tackles apiece for UMHB in the victory.

 

Damian Corredor ran for 37 yards on 22 carries for Kean. Vellis threw for 66 yards and Eddie DeMarchi caught three passes for 19 yards. Tom Winters has a game-high 10 tackles to lead the Cougar defensive effort.

 

UMHB has now won 48 consecutive regular season games. The Cru stretched its regular season home winning streak to 38 straight contests with the victory.

 

The Cru will have an open week next Saturday before returning to action with the start of American Southwest Conference play. UMHB will travel to Alpine to face Sul Ross State in a 1:00 PM kick off at Jackson Field on October 11th.
