Troy, NY --- Running back Mike Tivinis (Middleton, MA) rushed for a pair touchdown and Andrew Franks (Carmel, CA) booted a two field goals, including a 51-yarder, as host Rensselaer took back the Transit Trophy with a 27-6 victory over WPI on Saturday evening.
It was just the second win in five years in the rivalry for RPI, as WPI claimed the trophy last year with a 27-14 win in Worcester.
Worcester's Engineers scored its only touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Jacob Grills (East Lyme, CT) found Joe Igoe (Framingham, MA) on a four-yard touchdown pass. Igoe was the offensive star for the Crimson and Gray, hauling in five catches for 96 yards.
Sophomore Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) notched a career-best 16 tackles on the defensive end while Jason Lamb (Plymouth, MA) also achieved a new high with 15 stops and Robert Harasimowicz (Gardner, MA) ended with 12 tackles. Jonathan Arnone (Clinton, MA) blocked a kick for the Crimson and Gray.
RPI had a decided edge in rushing yards (235 to 26) while WPI enjoyed a large advantage in passing yards (209 to 57). The hosts also enjoyed a significant bulge in time of possession (34:38 to 25:22) and turnover margin (5 to 1).
WPI (1-3, 0-1 Liberty League) returns home next Saturday to start a two-game homestand. The Engineers face defending champion and nationally-ranked Hobart at noon. RPI (3-1, 1-0 Liberty League) is at Merchant Marine at 1pm.
