CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime defeated Holland College (PEI, Canada) 34-9 on Saturday afternoon, clinching the Kongsberg cup at Ritchie Field.
Jacob Doolan, Joseph DiBiase, and Michael Fahey combined for 445 rushing yards and five touchdowns to overcome the Hurricanes.
On the opening possession the Mariners stormed down the field with a big third-down run from Joseph DiBiase who took the ball 22 yards to the Hurricanes 28-yard line, setting up a scoring opportunity for Jacob Doolan who ran the ball in from 18 yards out to put the Mariners on the board first.
The Mariners held the Hurricanes to just five plays in their opening sequence before forcing a punt, which Johnny Weymouth blocked, putting Maine Maritime in great field position at the Holland 20-yard line.
Quarterback Michael Fahey ran the ball 20 yards in on the opening play of the team's second offensive drive to lift the Marines up 14-0.
Late in the first quarter Holland College had a 1st and goal opportunity from the 8-yard line, but the Mariners held the Hurricanes to three on a Jay Dearborn 24-yard field goal, making the core 14-3.
The Mariners commanded the next three scoring drives of the game, with Doolan bringing in a 78-yard rush, and Joseph DiBiase grabbing two rushing from two touchdowns from two yards out and 12 yards out to extend the Maine Maritime lead to 34-3.
Late in the fourth quarter the Hurricanes scored on a Khiry Best toss to Xavier Hanna for the 15-yard touchdown making the score at 34-9.
The Mariners accumulated 340 rushing yards on the afternoon, running 58 offensive plays with an average of a 6.5-yard gain on each play. The Hurricanes amassed 231 passing yards on the afternoon and 89 rushing yards.
Defensively, Justin Lovely led the Mariners with 10 total tackles. Cody McDonald and Matt Clifford grabbed interceptions on the afternoon; John Curtis recovered a fumble for the Mariners. Zach Davidson recorded 10 total tackles for the Hurricanes, while picking up a fumble recovery. Andrew Pidgeon and Jaylen McRae also recovered fumbles for the Hurricanes.
As the winners of today's game the Mariners captured the Kongsberg Cup.
