ALBANY, N.Y. (May 6, 2014) – The State University of New York (SUNY) recently announced its recipients of the 2013-14 SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award, with Maritime football's Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) receiving the honor this year for success in both the classroom as well as on the field.

The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award was created to recognize academic excellence as well as outstanding athletic achievement. Student-athletes are nominated by their athletic director, followed by their credentials being reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from all across the SUNY system as well as the provost's office. This year, 83 SUNY scholar-athletes were honored, a complete list of the honorees can be accessed at http://www.maritimeathletics.com/documents/2014/5/5/SUNY1314Chancellors.pdf.

"SUNY scholar-athletes are stand-out students who have excelled not only in their respective sports but in our classrooms as well," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "With an average GPA of 3.55 among this year's honorees, we are exceptionally proud of their achievements. Congratulations to each of the students recognized, and thank you to the many professors, coaches, and staff across SUNY who support them."

Since its inception during the 2004-05 academic year, Dietrich is the 22nd Maritime student-athlete to garner the honors and just the third member of the football team to be recognized. Following the 2010-11 year, Greg McGough was selected, while a season earlier Robert Johnson, Jr. was named to the elite listing in 2009-10. A complete list of all 22 of Maritime's SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award recipients can be found on the Academic Accolades page.

Dietrich on the field was named the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference's Special Teams Player of the Year this past fall season while setting a new single-season record for field goal percentage (75.0%) as he converted on nine of his 12 attempts on the season. In early November, he tied a single-game record while converting three field goals at home against Mount Ida, including the third longest field goal in Privateer history of 44-yards.

In the classroom, Dietrich currently has a cumulative 3.09 Grade Point Average through the Fall 2013 semester as he majors in Facilities Engineering at Maritime. He was named to the Admiral's List in the fall of 2012 for having a semester GPA of over 3.50.

The Maritime Athletic Department recognized Dietrich late last month for his accomplishment at Maritime's Annual Athletics Awards Banquet.
