Tomcats drop Bearcats 30-3 during Homecoming

More news about: Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Back in the cozy confines of Alumni Stadium after a 3-week stretch of road games, the Tomcats put an exclamation point on 2013 Homecoming with a 30-3 victory Saturday over the Saint Vincent Bearcats.

The Tomcats scored early and often in the Presidents' Athletic Conference win. After receiving the opening kickoff, Josh Potter (Chipley, Fla./Chipley) carried seven times for 40 yards, picking up three first downs along the way, to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Rich Kolesar (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf)Jon Fennick (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock ) added the extra point, and the Tomcats held a 7-0 lead.

Fennick was also a factor later in the first half when he kicked an 18-yard field goal to increase Thiel's lead to 10-0.

The Bearcats put together their best drive of the game to open the second half, and cut the Tomcats' lead to 10-3 when Morgan Porter concluded a 12-play, 50-yard drive with a 37-yard field goal.

Leading by just a touchdown after three quarters, the Tomcats scored 20 points in the final 15 minutes of the contest to earn the 30-3 Homecoming win.

Potter started the scoring barrage with 13 minutes remaining in regulation on a 59-yard touchdown run. After cutting through the middle of the defense, Potter appeared to be stopped for a marginal gain, but while being hit by a host of tacklers he broke free and sprinted to pay dirt for the Tomcats' second touchdown of the game.

Senior defensive back Rob Edwards (Poland, Ohio/Struthers) got in on the action on the ensuing possession. With the Bearcats in a fourth-and-3 situation from their own 44, Edwards stepped in front of an out pattern and scampered 47 yards down the sideline for the touchdown.

Saint Vincent threw another interception on its next drive, this time along the far sideline by linebacker Jack Sindlinger (Linesville, Pa./Linesville), who tapped his toes in the field of play before going out of bounds.

The interception led to Thiel's final touchdown, which came on a 12-yard slant pass from Ryan Radke (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) to Tim Walker (Beachwood, Ohio/Warrensville Heights).

Radke made his first start for the Tomcats. He completed 6-of-9 passes for 50 yards with one touchdown pass. He also ran for 52 yards on 11 carries.

Potter led Thiel's ground game with a season-high 138 yards on 18 carries, for a whopping 7.7 yards per carry average. He also scored a 59-yard touchdown run. Josh Wannamaker (Derry, Pa./Derry) also ran for 89 yards on 17 carries.

Sophomore defensive tackle Reily Shane (Tarentum, Pa./Highlands) recorded three sacks and three tackles for loss for the Tomcats. Edwards made six tackles and picked off one pass, which he returned 47 yards for a touchdown. Sindlinger, who also picked off a pass, and Martae Hainesworth (Warren, Ohio/Warren JFK) led Thiel with seven tackles apiece.

The Tomcats (1-5, 1-3 PAC) will return to action Saturday for Senior Parent Recognition Day when they host the Thomas More Saints. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
