Offensive Coordinator Matt Mumme has been named new head coach of LaGrange College football. Mumme joined the Panthers this summer after working the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Davidson (N.C.) College.
He assumes the post from Todd Mooney, who has stepped down after eight seasons with the LaGrange program to pursue other opportunities.
Mumme is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he played quarterback for his father, Hal. He began his coaching career as the quarterback coach at Southeastern Louisiana University, then went to New Mexico State as co-offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, and to McMurry University in Texas in the same roles, before working at Davidson.
"I look forward to taking the helm of a quality program at a place that emphasizes both academics and athletics," Mumme said. "And coming from a football family, being a head coach at a college like LaGrange has always been a goal."
Under Mumme's leadership, the LaGrange offense has produced a record-breaking effort. The Panthers are leading the USA South Conference and NCAA Division III in several offensive categories, and junior quarterback Graham Craig has broken numerous school and conference records.
Craig has passed for 2,756 yards and 28 touchdowns, both new school season bests. The Panthers are averaging more than 395 yards passing per game.
"Matt has shown tremendous leadership during his time here," said Athletic Director Jennifer Claybrook. "He has certainly energized our offense, and we look forward to what he will accomplish as head of the program."
College President Dan McAlexander said he has "great confidence in Matt's commitment to the college's vision. He connects football to our overarching mission of preparing students to become successful, responsible citizens who aspire to lives of integrity and moral courage."
At Davidson, Mumme's offenses rewrote school record books. Quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff broke the school passing record and was sixth in the nation, while receiver Lanny Funsten became an All-American under Mumme, setting a single-season school record with 100 receptions.
In two seasons at McMurry, Mumme's War Hawks were second in Division III in passing yards and led all of college football with 45 touchdown passes. His offense produced 6,699 passing yards and 71 touchdowns, driving the team's first winning season in 10 years.
Mumme has coached seven all-conference quarterbacks and receivers. In addition to Funsten earning All-American honors, Mumme also coached All-American quarterback Martin Hankins at Southeastern Louisiana. Hankins threw for 7,777 yards and 65 touchdowns and was a finalist for the Walter Peyton Award, the Heisman Trophy for the NCAA Division I Football Championship Series.
LaGrange College football began in 2006, and is in its second year as a member of the USA South.
