Nationally-Ranked Warhawks Shut Down Blugolds

More news about: UW-Eau Claire

WHITEWATER, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The 10th-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks scored at least one touchdown in each quarter, shutting out the UW-Eau Claire football team 42-0 at Perkins Stadium tonight.

The last time the Blugolds were shut out was Oct. 16, 2010 when Whitewater beat Eau Claire 45-0. The Blugolds have only been shut out four times since 1996, all at the hands of the Warhawks.

In the Blugolds' first Friday game since 1965, a fumble on the opening kickoff by Thurgood Dennis (Jr.-Allouez, Wis./Green Bay Notre Dame) gave the Warhawks the ball on the Eau Claire 30 and two plays later they found the end zone to take a 7-0 lead.

The Blugolds got a spark on Whitewater's following drive when Scott Burzynski (Sr.-Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) forced a fumble and Sean Graham (Sr.-Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall) recovered. But the Blugolds ended up punting it away after they managed to gain just one yard on three plays.

Whitewater tacked on another touchdown in the first quarter and added two more in the second to take a 28-0 lead into halftime. The Warhawks scored an additional touchdown on their opening possession in the third quarter and tacked on another with 9:48 remaining in the game.

Burzynski had a good game for Eau Claire, leading the team with 12 tackles (10 solo, two assists) while also punting 10 times, tied for 11th most in a single game in school history, for 349 yards. He forced two fumbles, recovering one of them.

The Blugolds struggled on offense tonight and finished with just 136 yards (69 passing, 67 rushing), their lowest total since a 27-0 loss to UW-Whitewater on Sept. 22, 2007 (130 yards of total offense).

Eau Claire drops to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the WIAC while Whitewater improves to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

Next Saturday, the Blugolds will be home to face UW-River Falls. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Carson Park.
