No. 23 Thomas More Falls to PAC Rival W&J on Saturday Night

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The 23rd-ranked Thomas More College football team dropped its first game of the season tonight (Saturday, October 12, 2013) as it fell, 45-21, to Washington & Jefferson College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Cameron Stadium in Washington, Pennsylvania.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the PAC.  With the win, the Presidents improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the PAC.

Thomas More led 14-7 after one quarter and Washington & Jefferson led 24-14 at halftime and 38-21 after three quarters.

Thomas More took a 7-0 lead when junior running back Domonique Hayden (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Christian Academy) scored on a 28-yard run and senior place kicker Tim Gormly, Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) added the point-after-attempt with 11:51 to play in the first quarter.

The Presidents tied the game at 7-7 with 8:25 to play in the opening half when Alex Baroffio scored on a one-yard run Craig Popp added the PAT.

Hayden caught a 49-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Jensen Gebhardt (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) and Gormly added the PAT with 6:38 to play in the first quarter and the Saints led 14-7.

Washington & Jefferson tied the game at 14-14 when Baroffio scored on a 10-yard pass from Matt Bliss and Popp added the PAT with 13:11 to play in the second quarter

The Presidents took their first lead of the game with 5:14 to play in the second quarter when Popp connected on a 19-yard field goal.

Washington & Jefferson took a 24-14 lead at halftime when Dion Wiegand scored on a one-yard run and Popp added the PAT with 3:45 to play in the first half.

Thomas More cut the lead to 24-21 with 6:36 to play in the third quarter when Hayden scored on a one-yard run and Gormly added the PAT.

On the ensuing kickoff, Wiegand returned the kick 92-yards for a touchdown and Popp added the PAT the Presidents extended the lead to 31-21 with 6:23 to play in the third quarter.

Washington & Jefferson increased the lead to 38-21 with 1:53 to play in the third quarter when Bliss connected on a 59-yard touchdown pass to Baroffio and Popp added the PAT.

Wiegand scored on a one-yard run and Popp added the PAT with 12:03 to play in the fourth quarter to extend the Presidents' lead to 45-21.

Hayden led the Saints' offense as he had 30 carries for 205 yards and two touchdowns and had two catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.  Gebhardt was 11-of-22 passing for 159 yards and one touchdown, while junior wide receiver Bobby Leonard (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) had five catches for 49 yards.

Sophomore defensive back Trey Wells (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) led the team in tackles with seven.  Sophomore linebacker Nick Pennekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) had six tackles, including one tackle for a loss, junior defensive lineman Will Freibert (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville) had six tackles and senior defensive back Adam Rauch (Yorkville, Ind./East Central) had six tackles.

Thomas More returns to action next Saturday (October 19) when it travels to Greenville, Pennsylvania to play Thiel College.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
