WPI Dealt Setback on the Road at Union

Schenectady, NY --- Junior quarterback Connor Eck (Rye, NY) was 12 for 18 with two touchdowns to lead the Union College football team to a 35-6 win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Dutchmen, playing in front of 2,114 in their Homecoming game, improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League while the Engineers now stand 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league.

Eck passed for 193 yards while T.J. Franzese (Allendale, NJ) (92 yards and two scores) andDarnell Thomas (West Caldwell, NJ) (84 yards with a TD) combined for 176 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Thomas Hayes (East Rutherford, NJ) led the Union defense with 12 tackles while Jake LaRovera (Ansonia, NY) had seven tackles. The Union defense kept WPI scoreless in the second half and has allowed a total of just 23 second half points in five games.

Union had 383 yards in total offense, including 193 through the air. WPI finished with 276 yards in total offense. Union now leads the all-time series, 33-8 and has won 17 of the last 18 meetings.

Jacob Grills (East Lyme, CT) was 12 for 30 for 98 yards and the TD while Zach Grasis (East Brookfield, MA) had 79 yards rushing and Larry McGillicuddy (Stow, MA) had 39 yards receiving with the touchdown reception. Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) had 12 tackles and Kevin Lynch (East Bridgewater, MA) and Robert Harasimowicz (Gardner, MA) had seven tackles each.

Union opened the scoring with a 23 yard touchdown pass to Nick Reali (Schenectady, NY) at 11:18, capping a seven play, 68 yard drive in 2:42. That was the only scoring of the first quarter. Union made it 14-0 when Franzese broke free for a 30 yard touchdown run just 57 seconds in the second quarter, just the second play of the drive. It was 21-0 with 7:52 left as Thomas ran in from two yards for the finish of a long drive. It took 10 plays and 65 yards with 5:01 off the clock.

On the ensuing drive, WPI started at their 25 and 13 plays later, Grills found McGillicuddy for a 13 yard touchdown, as this drive took 5:31. The point after was blocked and it remained 21-6 into the half.

Union took a 28-6 lead with 7:45 remaining in the third quarter. Reali's second of the day came on a seven yard catch from Eck, completing a seven play, 75 yard drive in 4:27. The only scoring of the fourth quarter came on a Franzese run 2:57 into the period. The seven play, 81 yard drive consumed 4:08.

Union is on the road for the next two weeks, but plays the final non-league game of the season next Saturday, October 19. The Dutchmen will have a 1pm kickoff at Western New England. WPI is idle next week and is scheduled to host the Merchant Marine Academy on October 26 at 3pm.
