Pipers Win Opener

More news about: Hamline

As he stood on the sidelines Saturday, Hamline head football coach Chad Rogosheske might have been having flashbacks to his playing days when he was clearing holes for workhorse back Eric Johnson, the all-time single season rushing leader in school history.

Sophomore RB Austin Duncan deked and juked his way all over Klas Field and created some history of his own, rushing for 173 yards, scoring three touchdowns as the Pipers held off Minn-Morris, 41-33, to get a victory in Rogosheske's head coaching debut before 1,100 sun-drenched fans.

The Pipers gave the stat sheet a workout, gaining 520 yards on 87 plays. Quarterbacks Zach Brautigam and Tim Bona did more than dish the ball to Duncan. Brautigam threw for 133 yards and a pair of scores. Bona passed for 115 yards and sprinted 18 yards for a touchdown. TE Philip Sherman was their favorite target, catching six passses for 102 yards and a score.

HU broke from the gate fast, jumping to a 28-6 intermission edge. Duncan ran in a pair of scores in the second half as the Pipers stretched their margin to 41-13. UMM, however, made things interesting, scoring three times in a span of seven minutes. The last tally came with 2:55 left. The Pipers, however, recovered the onside kick to give Rogosheske a triumph in his head coaching debut.

Hamline gets a week off to enjoy the season opening triumph. They start MIAC play September 21 against Carleton (1-0) in a night game at Klas (7:00 p.m. start).
