Second Half Costs Benedictine

More news about: Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University football team held a 13-7 halftime lead but allowed the visitors from Concordia Chicago to score 19 points in the second half on the way to a 26-13 victory on Family Weekend.

Benedictine was able to slow down the high octane offense of Concordia Chicago early by virtue of ball control offense. L.J. Stolarski secured an interception near the endzone to halt the opening drive of the day for the visitors following seven plays. The Eagles responded by using 7:43 of the opening quarter on a 15-play drive but came up empty with a missed field goal.

The first points of the day came following another interception. Stefan Herron stepped in front of a pass from Jake Koehler and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown with 6:19 remaining in the half. A penalty allowed the visitors solid field position and four plays later the game was even. Benedictine responded with another long drive, striking with :01 left to grab the 13-7 lead into the break. Concordia took a timeout to ice the kicker and Benedictine returned with the offense on the field. Cyle Schultz found Chris Schultz for a 10-yard touchdown in the back of the endzone to finish the drive.

Touchdowns less than 30 seconds apart allowed the Cougars to open a 20-13 lead. An odd bounce on a squib kick following the first touchdown allowed Concordia to recover and two plays later Koehler snuck in for a three-yard score. The final points came late in the fourth on a 42-yard pass to account for the final score.

John Borsellino recorded just his second 100-yard rushing game of the season with 122 yards on 27 carries. Artie Monaco caught six passes and carried the ball seven times. Defensively, the Eagles finished +1 in the turnover battle. Ben Lockton collected 13 tackles with Chris Buonavolanto adding 12.

Benedictine (3-5, 1-4) returns to action on November 3 in the final home contest of the season against Maranatha. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
