More news about: Christopher Newport

DANVILLE, Va.- Christopher Newport was powered by sophomore quarterback Marcus Morrast Saturday as the Captains downed Averett, 28-13. Morrast threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score as CNU improved to 4-3 overall and remained tied atop the USA South with a 3-1 conference record.

Morrast ended up with 156 yards rushing and 119 yards passing. He scored on a 29-yard run in the fourth quarter to put the Captains up by 21 and help seal the victory.

"Marcus was something special today, he made some amazing plays and really got our offense clicking," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said after the game.

CNU's defense was terrific, allowing just 38 yards rushing on 25 Averett attempts. Christopher Newport's Marvin Mills, senior cornerback, picked off two passes in the endzone thwarting Averett drives.

The Captains got on the board early after a blocked punt and recovery by freshman Arsaiah Robinson. Morrast connected with junior receiver Justin Williams on a 14-yard scoring pass to get CNU on the board. Morrast and Williams would connect again in the second quarter on a 7-yard touchdown throw to put the Captains up at the half, 14-0.

Morrast would throw his third TD late in the third quuarter, a 61-yard connection with sophomore receiver Rudy Rudolph that put the Captains ahead, 21-7.

Junior defensive end Justin Navarro led the Captains with 9 tackles and also posted a sack. Junior linebacker Evan Moog also contributed 9 tackles, while seniors Tyshawn Harris and Daniel Lewis each made 8 stops.

"This was a big win for us," Kelchner continued. "After what happened last week we knew we had to bounce back, and we did in a big way. Our defense was outstanding and we made some big plays."

CNU (4-3, 3-1) plays its final road game of the regular season next Saturday, traveling to Rocky Mount to take on North Carolina Wesleyan. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
