Blueboys bounce back, win homecoming game 31-9

More news about: Illinois College

Kendall Gibson threw three touchdown passes and ran for another and Illinois College scored a 31-9 win over Beloit College in its homecoming game Saturday at England Stadium in Jacksonville.

Gibson hooked up with Josh Gentile, Kevin Fuller and Branden Downing on touchdown passes and also ran for an 11-yard touchdown in the win. Davis Kinville led the IC ground attack with 109 yards rushing.

The Blueboy defense had its share of stars as well, with Carter Cox and Mike Ranos tallying nine tackles apiece, Kurt Frischman and Zack Meyer recording 1 1/2 sacks each, and Ryan Jefferson intercepting a pair of Beloit passes in the second half.

"It's always great to win our homecoming game," said Illinois College head football coach Garrett Campbell. "We didn't play well at times, but when we needed to make a play, our guys stepped up and made plays."

Gibson found Gentile on a 1-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter to give the Blueboys an early lead. Matt Newman, who remained perfect on PAT kicks this year on Saturday, followed with a 31-yard field goal to give the Blueboys a 10-0 halftime edge.

Gibson found Fuller on a 9-yard touchdown pass to open the third quarter, but a touchdown and a field goal from Beloit late in the period made it a one-possession game. A 39-yard touchdown pass from Gibson to Downing, followed quickly by Gibson's touchdown run, however, helped the Blueboys finish off the win.

The Illinois College offense racked up 402 yards of total offense while the IC defense limited Beloit to only 133, which included a minus-3 net rushing total.

Gibson chipped in 50 rush yards, while Mike Tonry added 35 and Cecil Brimmage ran for 32. Fuller was IC's leading receiver with five receptions for 83 yards.

Tim Denney and Marvell White each recorded 1/2 sacks; Denney had eight tackles, while White chipped in five. Frischman had two quarterback hurries.

Illinois College improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in Midwest Conference play with the win. The Blueboys travel to Knox College next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
