Statesmen Solid in Season Opener With Red Devils

(Geneva, N.Y.) – The Dickinson College football team suffered a tough, 31-0 loss in the season opener at #22 ranked Hobart College on Saturday. The Statesmen covered 399 yards on the day while holding the Devils to just 65.

 

Hobart scored on an 11 yard pass from Nick Strang to Mike Berkowitz to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. They blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone to stretch the lead to 14-0 at the 10:57 mark of the second quarter.

 

James Hull converted a 27 yard field-goal to close out the half, giving the hosts a 17-0 lead at the break. Hobart put together a pair of 70 yard scoring drives in the third quarter for the final of 31-0.

 

Bobby Dougherty led the Statesmen with 88 yards rushing while Strang threw for 117 yards.

 

Sophomore Nate Detwiler (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and sophomore Shane Mitchell (Whitehaven, Pa./Crestwood) each recorded a game-high nine tackles. Jack Margavitch (York, Pa./Dallastown), Connor Thompson (Jenkintown, Pa./Father Judge) and Mike Byrnes (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School) each tallied seven, including six solo stops by Margavitch.

 

Sophomore Adam Kaminski (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) had a busy afternoon, averaging 35.4 yards on 10 punts, dropping a pair inside the 20 yard line.

 

The Red Devils travel to Juniata College for the Centennial Conference opener next Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm in Huntingdon, Pa.
