Defense Dominates in 33-3 Win at Earlham

More news about: Oberlin

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team opened up the season with a 33-3 victory at Earlham College on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeomen defense was stifling on the day, holding the Quakers to just 109 yards of total offense. Senior David Kalgren led the way with two interception returns for touchdowns, the first going for 47 yards just before the first half horn with the second covering 43 yards in the third quarter. In total the Yeomen came away with five INTs and one fumble recovery.

Offensively, the Yeomen were guided by junior tailback Moses Richardson who rushed for a career-high 142 yards, which included a 52-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He also added a career-best 38 receiving yards.

The Yeomen offense got off to a slow start and settled for three first-half field goals from Erickson Andrews. The local Oberlin native cashed in kicks from 35, 24 and 48 yards, respectively. He tacked on a 28-yard attempt late in the fourth quarter to set a new school record for field goals in a game.

Leading 22-0 late in the third, Oberlin's shutout bid came to an end on an Earlham field goal.

Oberlin's lone offensive touchdown came courtesy of Richardson's TD run with 8:53 left in the game. The score capped a 6-play, 77-yard drive.

In addition to Kalgren, Shawn Chrapczynski, Zach Kisley and Tucker Kable each came away with interceptions in the ball game. Dominic Babb also recovered a fumble late in fourth quarter.

Clay Eaton recorded two sacks and three tackles for a loss and now needs 1.5 sacks to become the school's all-time sacks leader.  Kyle Kessler was the team's top tackler in the game with six stops to go along with two pass breakups.

The Yeomen have now won their season opener for the third straight season, a feat that has not happened since they were winners in week one in 1988, 1989 and 1990.

The Yeomen are idle next Saturday, but will return to action on September 15 when they host Ohio Wesleyan University at 1 p.m.
