Brockport Ends Season with Win over Morrisville

Freshman running back Tyrone Nichols (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) ran for a career-high 193 yard while fellow freshman Dylan Umbra (Sidney, NY/Sidney) ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns leading The College at Brockport Football team to a 35-20 victory over Morrisville Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.

Brockport (3-7 Overall, 2-7  NJAC) took an early lead as Umbra scored twice in the first quarter capping a seven-play drive with a 13-yard scoring run and then later in the quarter ending a nine-play drive with a 24-yard scamper as the Golden Eagles held a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Morrisville (1-9, 1-8) put together a scoring drive to pull within a touchdown at 14-7 but with four seconds remaining in the first half, Nichols capped an 81-yard drive to put Brockport up 21-7 as the teams headed into the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter, Nichols put Brockport ahead 28-7 at the end of a short three-play drive as he caught a pass from Umbra and ran to the end zone for his second touchdown of the day with the 38-yard reception and run.

Morrisville mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter scoring after an 11-play drive at the 9:20 mark of the quarter to make it a 28-14 Brockport lead and three minutes later, returned a fumble 89 yards for the score to make it a 28-20 game after the extra point was with to the right.

Brockport recovered and ran the ball on its next drive eating up most of the rest of the time in the quarter and capping the drive with 11 seconds left in the game with a Nichols 1-yard plunge to seal the victory.

Nichols finished with 193 yards on the ground, 37 yards receiving and 26 yards on a kickoff return for 256 all-purpose yards on the day. Umbra ran for 114 yards and threw for another 145 and scored three times for the Golden Eagles with two rushing and one passing score.

Jordan Hogan (Lockport, NY/Newfane) led the receivers with three catches for 67 yards.

Defensively, Jim Carlson (Port Henry, NY/Moriah) led the team with 12 tackles, John O'Hagan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) added eight stops and a quarterback sack. Defensive backs Andrew McCormick (Peru, NY/Peru) and Maurice Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Grand Street Campus) had four and three pass breakups respectively. Kyle Carman (Wayland. NY/Wayland-Cohocton) had his first career interception as he picked off a pass in the end zone stopping a potential scoring drive by Morrisville.
