Brockport Football Falls at Buffalo State

More news about: Brockport

Freshman wide receiver Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) caught seven passes including one for a 16-yard scoring play in the high-scoring first quarter for The College at Brockport Football team Saturday afternoon but Buffalo State scored 51 points and won a 51-30 decision in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game in Buffalo.

Buffalo State (4-5 Overall, 4-3 NJAC) scored 28 points in the first half and held a 48-23 lead at halftime but the Brockport (2-6, 2-5) defense regrouped after the break and held the Bengals to just three points over the final 30 minutes of the game. The Brockport offense, however, managed just seven points in the second have. All the scoring in the second half was limited to the fourth quarter.

Buffalo State opened the scoring on its first drive and scored each of the seven times they had the ball in the first half.

Mrozek's touchdown reception in the first quarter tied the score at 7-7 and capped an eight-play, 63 yard drive. Mrozek had three receptions in the drive and a run for three yards as well.

The Bengals answered quickly scoring with a 40-yard run on the second play of the ensuing drive to take the lead for good in the game. A fumble stopped the next Brockport drive near midfield and the Bengals scored on the second play of its drive again – this time with a 53-yard run – to take a 21-7 lead.

Junior quarterback Joe Scibilia (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) connected with Mrozek again on the next drive for a 24-yard play and two plays later completed a pass to junior Jordan Hogan (Lockport, NY/Newfane) for another 20 yards to get the ball inside the 10-yard line. Scibilia scored on a three-yard run to cap the drive.

In the second quarter, Buffalo State scored on an eight-play drive to open the quarter before Brockport regained possession and drove down the field all the way to the Buffalo 25 yard line. The drive stalled there but junior kicker Bobby Giambra (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) hit a 42 yard field goal to make it a 35-16 midway through the second quarter.

Buffalo State scored on its final two possessions of the half and Brockport added a touchdown on a six-yard pass play from Scibilia to Hogan. On the final drive of the half, Brockport marched down to the Bengal 23-yard line but as time expired in the half, Giambra's 40-yard field goal attempt rattled off the left upright to make the halftime score 48-23.

In the third quarter, each defense shined as the offensive units were unable to score. Senior Rob Lindquist (Cherry Creek, NY/Pine Valley) recovered a fumble to spark the Brockport defense early in the quarter and sophomore Ross Ragonesi (East Northport, NY/Northport) recovered a fumble on the second Bengal drive of the half.

A Buffalo field goal from 38 yards out was the only scoring of the final quarter for the Bengals.

A 21-yard rushing touchdown by freshman quarterback Dylan Umbra (Sidney, NY/Sidney) ended the scoring for the Golden Eagles.
