Spartans Remain Atop IIAC With Victory over Cornell

The University of Dubuque football team continue to remain at the top of the Iowa Conference after a 40-17 victory at Cornell College on Saturday.

The Spartans victory was highlighted by quarterback Wyatt Hanus who has quietly tied the Iowa Conference passing touchdowns in a game record for the second time in 2011. He completed 14-22 attempts for 265 yards and six touchdowns. Michael Zweifel led all receivers in the game with seven catches for 157 yards and four touchdowns with his longest being from 74 yards. Demacus Fleming caught a 29 yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Tim Clary caught the first touchdown of the day on a three yard grab at 10:14 of the opening quarter of play.

The Spartans finished with 431 yards of offense, a balanced attack of 158 yards of rushing and 273 passing. Justin Spaulding led the rushers with 16 attempts for 104 yards for an average of 6.5 yards a carry. Defensively Anthony Losasso ended with 12 tackles, one fumble recovery and one tackle for loss. Stephen Vassalotti chased the Rams quarterback all afternoon and collected two sacks for a loss of 14 yards.

Zweifel nears closer to the all-time reception leader, currently has 408 catches for 5374 yards and 47 touchdowns for his collegiate career.

The Spartans, who lead the IIAC in nearly offensive category, continue their road trip next week at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
