Maxwell, Brumm set milestones for Augsburg in loss to Concordia-Moorhead

More news about: Augsburg

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Running back Tyler Maxwell (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) scored two touchdowns and tied an Augsburg College single-season school record for rushing scores, and Marcus Brumm (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) became the third Auggie quarterback in school history to throw for 6,000 career yards, but the Auggies dropped a 38-26 decision to host Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Jake Christiansen Stadium.

Maxwell rushed 16 times for 51 yards, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a three-yard run in the fourth quarter. He now has 11 touchdowns (10 rushing, one receiving) on the season, with the 10 rushing scores tying Augsburg's single-season record for rushing touchdowns, first set in 2004 by Marcus LeVesseur. Maxwell now has 114 rushes for 578 yards on the season. LeVesseur holds the school's single-season records for both rushes (256) and rushing yardage (1,024), also set in 2004.

With 278 yards passing on 18-of-27 with a touchdown, Brumm became the third Auggie in school history to eclipse the 6,000-yard passing plateau, joining Jordan Berg (8,777 yards, 2006-08) and Derrin Lamker (6,624 yards, 1993-97). Brumm now has 6,035 passing yards on 521-of-957 passing with 39 touchdown passes -- ranking third in school history in every career passing category.

Wide receiver Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) caught nine passes for a career-high 191 yards, scoring a touchdown on a five-yard reception with 9:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Augsburg (4-2 overall, 3-2 MIAC) trailed 21-6 at halftime, but rallied back to cut the lead to five points midway through the fourth quarter, as Bourne-McFarlane's score trimmed the Cobber advantage to 31-26. But Concordia (5-2 overall, 3-2 MIAC) staged a 13-play, 72-yard drive and took 7:25 off the clock to score its final touchdown with 1:54 left, sealing the victory.

Wesley Waytashek (JR, Little Falls, Minn.) kicked two first-half field goals -- a 32-yarder late in the first quarter and a 21-yarder late in the second quarter -- to keep the Auggies in the game.

Concordia controlled the tempo of the ballgame, holding the ball for 36:52 compared to 23:08 for Augsburg. The Cobbers gained 415 yards (220 rushing, 195 passing) on 78 offensive plays, compared to 363 yards (278 passing, 85 rushing) for Augsburg on 53 plays.

Each of Concordia's scoring drives consumed eight or more plays, 52 or more yards and each was 3:38 or longer -- including a 15-play, 96-yard, 7:43 drive in the second quarter that proved to be one of the turning points of the game. Trailing 7-3, Augsburg was poised to take the lead with the ball at the Concordia 2-yard line, but the Auggies fumbled the ball near the goal line, and the Cobbers took over at their own 4-yard line. Fifteen plays later, Cobber quarterback Michael Dunham threw a 19-yard touchdown to Bronson Shepherd, giving the Cobbers a 14-3 advantage.

Brett Baune rushed 26 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns for the Cobbers -- a five-yarder in the first quarter and a five-yarder on the final drive of the game for Concordia. Dunham completed 14-of-22 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing 11 times for 15 yards and two touchdowns -- a one-yarder just before halftime and a one-yarder early in the fourth quarter. Shepherd caught six passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.

For Augsburg, linebacker Bryce Vee (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) claimed a career-high 17 tackles (two solo), including a sack and forced fumble, for his fourth double-digit tackle game of the season and seventh of his career. Felix Coleman (FY, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) tied a season-best with 10 tackles (five solo), while Adam Sonntag (JR, Green Lake, Wis.) and Edmond Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) had nine tackles each.

Aaron Perry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Mitch Gerold (SR, Braham, Minn.) also had quarterback sacks, and Demetrice Whittaker (JR, Cocoa, Fla.) had an interception and returned it 31 yards in the fourth quarter, setting up the Auggies' final touchdown.

For Concordia, Peter Hvidston and Seth Lage had seven tackles each, with Hvidston recording a sack and forced fumble. Reed Hefta also had a sack for the Cobbers, and Tyler Berling had an interception.

Both teams return to action next Saturday (10/22) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg hosting St. Olaf at Edor Nelson Field and Concordia playing at Hamline.
