Defense gets another shutout as Tommies roll

More news about: St. Thomas

Senior All-American Fritz Waldvogel caught two touchdown passes and the No. 3-ranked Tommies roared to a 49-0 victory over Hamline in MIAC football play Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

A Homecoming crowd of more than 4,000 watched the Tommies (7-0 overall, 5-0 MIAC) build a 42-0 lead midway through the second quarter. UST ran its conference win streak to 16 and its regular-season win streak to 21.

St. Thomas posted its second shutout in a row -- a feat last recorded 30 seasons ago by the 1981 Tommies -- and have allowed just seven points in their last 12 quarters.

The Toms prepared for next week's showdown game at nationally-ranked Bethel as it used a 21-0 second quarter advantage to help build their cushion. St. Thomas has outscored its seven opponents 100-7 in the second quarter this season.

Hamline (0-6, 0-4) recorded just two first downs, minus-one rushing yard, and 28 total yards on 53 plays. The UST defense also chipped in points as junior linebacker Kyle Mulrooney had a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter.

St. Thomas forced the Pipers into 11 punts and shut out the Pipers on 18 third-and fourth-down conversion tries. UST has allowed just 44.7 rushing yards per game in their 7-0 start. The Tommie defense also had 11 tackles for loss, including two sacks apiece from Willy Baregi and Tremayne Williams.

The Tommies, who punted just twice, used three quarterbacks and five running backs as they rolled up 26 first downs and 440 yards of offense. Senior Ricky Margarit had four receptions for 114 yards and freshman Aaron Terrell-Byrd rushed 15 times for 65 yards.

Waldvogel, who played just two quarters, scored his 38th and 39th career touchdowns and broke the school record for career receiving TDs, now at 28.
