Paint Bucket Trophy returns to Macalester

T. Joe Loiselle (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) ran the ball 38 times for 173 yards and a touchdown to lift Macalester past visiting Hamline 17-0 and claim the Paint Bucket Trophy for the first time since 1998.  This was the 112th meeting between these two Snelling Ave. rivals, the Scots snapping a 12-game losing streak in the series.

 

Macalester's defense was dominant in all four quarter and held the Pipers to just 207 yards in total offense.   Hamline completed just 7-of-28 passes (with two picks) for 90 yards.

In addition to getting a 1-yard scoring plunge by Loiselle in the fourth quarter, the Scots also had a 15-yard scoring pass from Clark Bledsoe (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal) to Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) in the third quarter, and a an Auburn Jimenez (So., East Los Angeles, Calif. / St. John Bosco) field goal to open the scoring in the first half.

 

Macalester's defense had its best game of the season, and received interceptions from Aaron Gallegos (Jr., Lakeville, Minn. / North) and Scott Foltz (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.).Spencer Robinson and Nate Sands each registered 10 tackles.  Adam Bunkowske (Jr., Beaver Dam, Wis. / Wayland Academy) and David Melms (Jr., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) broke up a couple passes each from their positions in the defensive backfield.

 

The Scots opened the scoring by driving 90 yards on 14 playing, taking 7:06 off the clock and culminating just before the end of the first quarter.

 

Macalester drove 60 yards on just seven plays on its opening second half drive to go up 10-0.  Six plays running plays by Mike Adams (Jr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) and Loiselle set the stage for Bledsoe's 15-yard scoring strike to Marshall.

 

The third and final scoring drive for Mac started early in the fourth quarter.  Macalester went 70 yards on 10 plays, with the big play being a 33-yard completion from Bledsoe to Mike Snavely (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest).

 

Macalester plays Hiram (Ohio) next Saturday (Oct. 8).  The game will be played on a neutral site, at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill.
