Krauss Passes Albion Over Kalamazoo

More news about: Albion

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The offensive line gave Spencer Krauss plenty of time and the Albion College quarterback took advantage by throwing for a school-record 434 yards as the Britons dumped Kalamazoo College, 36-26, in the opening Saturday of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football action.

Head Coach Craig Rundle also credited receivers J.C. Cruse and Zach Brewer for turning short passes into big gains. Cruse finished with 225 receiving yards, including an 80-yard touchdown for Albion's first score. Brewer rolled up 112 yards, including 10- and 73-yard touchdown plays.

"We protected Spencer a lot," Rundle said after Krauss broke Steve Wasil's mark of 412 yards establish in Albion's 2005 win over Alma College.

Logan Anes took advantage of his first opportunity to shine as Albion's featured running back. With Clinton Orr and Dennis Duncan out, Anes carried 19 times for 96 yards. Anes scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 9-yard run late in the third quarter.

"Logan was ready when we needed somebody to step up," Rundle said. "It was great to see him ready to take advantage of the opportunity."

Overall, Albion rolled up 579 yards of total offense. It was Albion's most productive day since chewing up 573 yards in a 60-10 win over Alma College in the final game of the 2009 campaign.

Defensively, Albion grounded Dimeko Price, the third-leading rusher in the MIAA. Prince was held to 44 yards on 20 carries. Hornet quarterback Nick Jones passed for 235 yards and three scores, but he was sacked four times. Defensive lineman Jacob Heinrich wrapped up four tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks. Jason Bajas and C.J. Carroll were also credited with sacks.

"We stepped up in the second half and we didn't have to make many adjustments," Rundle said of the defense that allowed just six points in the second half. "All of the guys played hard and got big-time pressure on the quarterback and they played well against the rush."

Nick Pendell completed Albion's scoring with field goals of 21, 19, and 36 yards.
