Lewis & Clark holds off Macalster comeback

More news about: Macalester

Lewis & Clark (Ore.) remained unbeaten by jumping out to a quick start and holding off the Scots for a 37-28 victory at Macalester Stadium.

The Pioneers led 24-7 early in the third quarter before Mac made a game of it, getting to within three points at 24-21 and 31-28 at the midway mark of the fourth quarter.  Lewis & Clark, however, held on for the win.

Lewis & Clark compiled 593 yards in offense and is now 3-0 on the season.  Macalester had 407 yards and 23 first downs, and is now 1-3 on the year.

T. Joe Loiselle (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) ran for 139, mostly in the second half, and scored on a 48-yard scamper in the third quarter.  Quarterback Clark Bledsoe (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal) had an efficient day throwing the ball, going 17-for-23 with three TDs and no interceptions.  He tossed touchdowns to John Johnson (So., McKenzie, Tenn.), Riley Koval (Jr., Mount Horeb, Wis.) and Mike Snavely (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest).

Leading Mac's defense was Joe Dykema with 13 tackles.  Nate Sands was in on 11 stops, while Will Dhonau (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis.) had 1 ½ sacks, 2 ½ tackles for loss, and a recovered fumble.

Lewis & Clark quarterback Keith Welch went 26-for-36 for 337 yards and no picks, and had a pair of 100-yard receivers (both with nine catches).  Joevonte Mayes rushed for 98 yards.

The Scots play host to Snelling Ave. rival Hamline next Saturday (Oct. 1) at 1 p.m.  This will be the 112th time these two schools have met on the gridiron, making it the longest-running rivalry in the state.
