Big Football Picks Up Road Victory

          The Millikin University football team went to 2-1 on the season with a 27-15 win at Hope College in Holland, Michigan on Sept. 17.

          Millikin capitalized on five Hope turnovers including three interceptions to pull out the victory.

          The Flying Dutchmen opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 20 yard field goal from Evan Finch to go up 3-0.

          Hope threatened to make it a 10-0 ball game in the second quarter as the drove the ball deep into Big Blue territory before the drive was stopped at the Millikin two yard line when Josh Pollard recovered a fumble by Hope quarterback Michael Atwell.

          Millikin then drove 98 yards to take the lead on a 15 yard touchdown run by Matt Holmes with 3:21 left in the first half.

          Hope quickly answered back to take a 9-7 lead with 22 seconds left on a four yard run by Bryan Lynn. 

          The game turned in the Big Blue's favor in the third quarter.  With just over 10 minutes left in the third Sonnie Rollins picked off an Atwell pass at the Millikin 32 yard line.  The Big Blue would again capitalize on a Hope turnover capping off a nine play drive with a one yard Sean Dunning run to go up 13-9.

          On Hope's next possession, Millikin senior linebacker Keith Burczak picked off another Atwell pass and returned it 51 yards to make it 20-9, Millikin.

          Millikin would score again early in the fourth quarter on a four yard run by Tyler Roush.

          Hope's final score came on a three yard run by Fluarry Jackson.

          Holmes was solid at quarterback for Millikin going 10-17 passing for 187 yards.  He picked up 41 yards on the ground.  Roush topped the Big Blue rushers with 77 yards on 19 carries while Dunning had 62 yards on 11 carries.  Tommy Eichenauer had five catches for 110 yards. 

          Mitchell Caffey and Marquette Moore each had 14 tackles for Millikin.  Daniel Fishel had Millikin's other interception. 

          Millikin is off next week and travels to Augustana to open CCIW play on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m.
