Football Pulls Out Exciting Homecoming Victory

More news about: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CMS beat Whittier 30-27 on Saturday in a back and forth game that was tied three times and that each team led multiple times.  The Stags are now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC.  The win showed the depth of the team as at one point in the first half the team was missing their entire starting offensive backfield and three of their starting defensive backs.

CMS led the game early 7-0 as Adam Morris (SR, Honolulu, HI) stepped in front of a screen pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown.  The rest of the half was all Whittier as they answered right away with a long touchdown reception and then pushed ahead 13-7 on two field goals.  The Stags struggled on the offensive end with only 46 yards in first half offense.

Spencer Clark (SR, Edmonds, WA), who sat out the first half with a bad ankle, returned in the second half and keyed the team's offensive resurgence.  He tied the game on an eight-yard TD run early in the second half (pictured) and then put the team ahead 27-20 on a 57 yard TD reception from Peter Kimmey (SO, Seattle, WA) early in the fourth quarter.  Whittier returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and then the Stags defense stepped up.  The Poets intercepted a Kimmey pass at the CMS 40, but the defense forced a three-and-out without allowing any yards.  The Stags were able to get into field goal range and Chet Corcos (SO, Fair Oaks) hit a 32-yard game winning field goal.  The defense held again forcing Whittier to turn the ball over on downs with 38 seconds remaining.

CMS plays their final home game of the season this Saturday, October 30 against Cal Lutheran University.  Game time is 1:00.
