Stags Down Panthers, Improve To 4-0

More news about: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

The football team improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2002 (and only the third time ever [1971]) with a 31-21 win over visiting Chapman University on Saturday.  This was the team's first win over the Panthers since 2006.  CMS' strong defense and fast developing offense dominated much of the game.  The Stags will hit the road this Saturday for a 7:00 matchup at the University of Redlands.

The Stags' defense, ranked 16th nationally against the run, held the Panthers to 107 yards on 31 carries while the Stags' offense, ranked 16th nationally in rushing, racked up 300 yards on 54 carries including four touchdowns.  Peter Kimmey (SO, Seattle, WA) rushed for 116 yards on 13 carries with three touchdowns to lead the team.  Spencer Clark (SR, Edmonds, WA) added 98 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown.

The defense stopped the Panthers on eight of 11 drives forcing four turnovers and four punts.  Three of the turnovers came with Chapman in scoring territory.  Elijah Chiang (JR, Tempe, AZ) had an interception as did defensive lineman Eric Janicki (SO, Evanston, IL) on a ball he batted in the air and caught at the line.  Dylan Marcott (SO, Keenesburg, CO) recovered a fumble caused by Matt Laredo (JR, Pacific Grove) and Kyle Hansen (SO, Issaquah, WA) also recovered an errant snap.

The team's players of the week were: Offensive - Ross Sevy (JR, OL, Novato); Defensive -  Laredo (LB); Special Teams - David Spiller (SR, LB & Punt Returner, Sacramento).
