Voss Sets Record as Knights Tops Cougars

MORRIS, Minn. - The MLC football team pounded the ball on the ground to the tune of 295 yards rushing in a 28-21 win at Minnesota, Morris Saturday.

MLC running back Aaron Voss set the new record for career rushing yards, breaking the previous record held by Joel Russow. Voss had 99 yards on the day, giving him 2,473 yards for his career.

MLC jumped to a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass from Greg Holzhueter to Galen Holzhueter, capping an 11-play drive.

After the Cougars tied the game in the final seconds of the second quarter, the Knights took command of the game in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns to take a 21-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Greg Holzhueter scored on a 24-yard run to take a 14-7 lead, and Voss scored on a seven-yard run with just under two minutes to play in the third quarter.

The Cougars cut the deficit to 21-14 around the ten minute mark of the fourth quarter, but the Knights put the game away with a Greg Holzhueter rushing touchdown.

Greg Holzhueter finished the day with 112 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and 132 yards passing with one score. Mark Waldschmidt added 73 yards rushing on nine carries to help the ground effort.

Defensively, the Knights held strong while the offense struggled with three turnovers in the first half. MLC held UMM to 107 rushing on the day, and forced four turnovers themselves. Joe Lindloff led teh defensive effort with ten tackles, while Benjamin Olson and Justin Eternick each had interceptions.

With the win, MLC improved to 3-3 on the season, and 2-2 in the UMAC, while UMM dropped to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in conference.

The Knights will return to action next week Saturday, October 16, when they host Westminster. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
