Vlasak runs to record 5 TDs in 35-14 Platteville win

More news about: UW-Platteville

Prior to UW-Platteville's Homecoming football game against 17th-ranked UW-Eau Claire, sophomore Lee Vlasak had exactly one career carry.

Suffice to say, that total will greatly increase.

Vlasak moved from receiver to running back this week and set a Pioneer record with five rushing touchdowns in UW-Platteville's 35-14 win. He became just the sixth player in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history to score that many touchdowns on the ground. (UW-Eau Claire's Cory Sartorelli holds the WIAC mark with six.)

Vlasak, who was a running back at Pecatonica-Argyle, ran for three touchdowns of one yard each and two of two yards. He ran 33 times for 114 rushing yards and caught four passes for 91 more. He scored four times in the first half alone, as the Pioneers ran to a 28-7 halftime lead. He extended the margin to 35-7 on the Pioneers' first possession of the second half, capping a 72-yard drive.

Both teams are now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in WIAC play. Joel Sweeney accounted for both Blugold touchdowns, running in from 19 yards to tie the score at 7-7 and from eight yards out with 5:53 left in the third quarter.

The Pioneers out-gained the Blugolds 376-276, with Nick Anderson throwing for 200 yards on a 15-25 day. Joe Burkeland added 59 receiving yards on six catches.

Sweeney finished with 114 rushing yards, and quarterback Austin Neu threw for 152 but was sacked five times by the Pioneer defense. Corey Marks and Jesse Lindemulder each registered two sacks, and Alex Schaefer had the other.

Notes: Three of UW-Platteville's scoring drives were of at least 10 plays and 72 yards, including the first 17-play, 94-yard match that consumed 7:32 ... the Pioneers were playing their third straight game against a ranked team, having fallen to #18 Wheaton and #1 UW-Whitewater ... UWP improved to 41-37-4 all-time in their Homecoming history ... the Pioneers now lead the season series with the Blugolds 26-22-1 ... the contest will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
