Big second-half fuels Tommie victory

More news about: St. Thomas

Senior Ben Wartman and junior Colin Tobin each surpassed 100 rushing yards and No. 4-ranked St. Thomas scored 41 second-half points in Saturday's 55-17 MIAC football victory over Augsburg before 4,000 in attendance at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

The Tommies (6-0 overall, 4-0 MIAC) are off to a 6-0 start for the first time since 1986 as they ran their home win streak to 11. They are alone in first place in the conference by one-half game over 3-0 Bethel, a 17-14 winner at home over St. John's. Bethel visits St. Thomas for the Tommies' Homecoming on Oct. 23.

UST led only 14-10 at halftime but scored five consecutive touchdowns in the first 20:11 of the second half to build a 48-10 lead. UST had the ball 19:33 and ran 53 offensive plays in the final 30:00 on the clock.

The Auggies (3-3, 1-3) got a two TD-pass, 250-yard aerial day from QB Marcus Brumm, capped by a 70-yard catch and run by freshman WR Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane.

UST junior All-American Fritz Waldvogel had 180 all-purpose yards, including 150 yards on 10 receptions. Junior QB Dakota Tracy improved to 10-0 as a starter on his career as he completed 15-of-24 passes for 185 yards and two TDs.

Wartman scored his 43rd career touchdown on a 2-yard second-quarter run and finished with 118 yards on 21 carries. UST is now 20-2 since 2008 when Wartman surpasses 100 rushing yards. Junior Colin Tobin had two TD runs, including a 67-yard score in the fourth quarter. Tobin finished with 114 yards on eight carries.

The Tommie defense got an interception, a break-up and five tackles from Ryan Deitz; a sack from Zach Sturm; and two pass break-ups by Brady Ervin.

UST plays next Saturday at Hamline.
