The Washington University in St. Louis football team snapped a
two-game losing streak with a 36-6 victory over Westminster College
on Saturday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo. The Bears led
10-0 at halftime, but erupted for 26 second-half points.
Senior quarterback Stephen Sherman threw for a career-high 229
yards and two touchdowns in the win. Sophomore kicker Eric
Chalifour tied a school record with three made field goals,
connecting on kicks from 27, 33 and 26 yards out.
After a scoreless first quarter, Chalifour booted a 27-yard field
goal to give the Bears a 3-0 lead with 4:49 left before halftime.
The big play of the drive was a 43-yard completion from Sherman to
freshman Drew Sexton. The Bears pushed the halftime advantage to
10-0 after a three-yard touchdown run by sophomore Chris
Castelluccio with 46.2 seconds left in the half.
Washington U. totaled 179 yards of total offense in the first half,
with 130 yard through the air. Sherman completed just 7-of-17 in
the opening half, but connected on three completions over 20
yards.
Chalifour's 33-yard field goal with 10:45 left in the third
quarter pushed Washington University's lead to 13-0. After
the Bears' defense forced a punt, Sherman found Sexton for an
18-yard touchdown to make it 19-0. The Bears put the game out of
reach on their next possession, as Sherman found junior Easton
Knott in the end zone for a 24-yard TD to extend the lead to 26-0.
Junior Daniel Grimm added a 42-yard touchdown run to round out the
scoring for the Bears.
Senior Tom Gulyas had six catches for 88 yards, increasing his
career reception total to 100. Grimm led the rushing attack with 59
yards on three carries. Senior defensive lineman Greg Larson led
the defensive unit with seven tackles, three for a loss, 1.5 sacks
and a pass break-up. Washington U. recorded a season-high three
interceptions in the victory: senior defensive back Brandon Brown,
junior linebacker Kyle Larkin and freshman defensive back Andrew
Skalman.
Following a bye week, Washington University (2-2) will host No. 20
ranked Wabash College on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. Wabash
improved to 3-0 with a 31-14 victory over the University of Chicago
on Saturday.
Bear Notebook: Washington University leads the overall series with
Westminster, 16-2-1, and the Bears have won nine-straight meetings
… Brown notched his 11th career interception in the first
quarter, 11th most in school history … The third quarter
took 46 minutes … Washington University has outrushed all
three of its opponents this year … The victory for head
coach Larry Kindbom was the 160th of his career ... Washington U.
has won its three-straight home games dating back to last
season.
