Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College
football team amassed a school-record 622 yards of total offense as
they cruised to a 47-21 victory over the Hiram College Terriers on
Saturday afternoon.
The Yeomen threw for 401 yards, which is the third-highest
single-game total in school history, and also had a breakout
performance on the ground with 221 yards rushing. The total of 622
yards best the previous record of 597 which was set in a 48-34 win
over Heidelberg in 2006.
With the win the Yeomen improved to 2-1 overall – a mark
they have not achieved since the 1989 season – and 1-1 in the
NCAC.
In relief of Josh
Mandel, senior Joey
Zebelian was simply outstanding under center as he threw
for 323 yards and four touchdowns, completing 22-of-28 passes along
the way.
The Yeomen had two 100-yard receivers as tight end Danny
Enright snagged seven balls for 127 yards and a score,
while Cory Kidd
caught six passes for 108 yards and a TD. On the ground it was
Drew Mixter
who led the way with 108 yards on 15 carriers and one
touchdown.
After Hiram sent the opening kickoff out of bounds the Yeomen
marched right down the field on their first drive, which resulted
in six-yard TD run by Mandel.
Hiram would get back to even before the end of the first quarter,
but in the second quarter it as all Yeomen as they exploded for 20
points in the period. Mixter capped off a 12-play, 91-yard drive
with a two-yard TD-plunge at the 14:06 mark. OC would later
orchestrate a 14-play, 96 yard drive that ended with a Zebelian to
Ryan Harvey
touchdown from seven yards out.
With the first half clock winding down and the Yeomen leading
20-7, C.J. Plyler
came away with one of his two interceptions in the game and set the
Yeomen up at midfield with 1:14 to go. This time the Yeomen needed
only two plays to find paydirt as Zebelian hooked with Adam Niec
for 21 yards on first down and then on the very next play he went
deep to Kidd for a 30-yard scoring strike to make it 27-7 at the
half.
In the third quarter the Yeomen would add a 32-yard Zach
Richard field goal on their first possession. However,
following a Hiram touchdown, the Yeomen would strike quickly once
again as Zebelian connected with Enright for 50 yards to setup a
first-goal. On the next play they would throw it to him again on an
inside-screen that Enright caught at the five-yard line and turned
up field and dove inside the pylon for the score to give OC a 37-15
bulge through three quarters.
In the fourth quarter the Yeomen would add another field goal and
touchdown. The TD came courtesy of Ryan
Harvey who caught a short pass and turned it into a
19-yard score.
Hiram would add a touchdown in the closing seconds, but it was too
little to late for the Terriers.
David
Kalgren led the Yeomen defense with seven tackles to go
along with one interception and one pass break-up. Clay Eaton
had two tackles for a loss.
Oberlin will look to build off this performance next week when the
nationally ranked Wittenberg Tigers come to Savage Stadium for a 1
p.m. tilt.
