Sea Gulls Soar, but Eagles Score

More news about: Husson

BANGOR, ME—The Husson University Eagles were able to rack up their first points of the season against the Salisbury University Sea Gulls today at Winkin Complex in Bangor, ME.  True freshman wide receiver Ben Foss (Fy., Wales, ME), recorded his first career catch as well as touchdown for the Eagles with only 2:06 left in the game.  This unfortunately was no match for the high powered Sea Gull offense who exploded with 84 points on the day.  Salisbury quarterback Dan Griffin (So., Jarrettsville, MD) was able to score the opening touchdown for the Sea Gulls just over 4 minutes into the game.  Griffin also threw two touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards on the day.

On Husson's first drive of the game, quarterback Jack Hersom (Jr., Sidney, ME) threw an interception which was taken by Sea Gull Justin Chura (Sr., Lothian, MD) to the Husson 30 yard line.  Their next drive resulted in a 30 yard rushing touchdown by Bryan Woolson (Sr., White Hall, MD) to give the Sea Gulls a 14-0 lead.  On the ensuing possession, Husson was able to move the ball down the field, however the drives stalled and Justin Lindie (Sr., Winslow, ME) was able to pin the ball at the Salisbury 13 yard line.  Lindie ended the day averaging 35 yards per punt, downing two inside the 20 yard line.

Salisbury's next 5 drives of the first half were all able to reach the end zone.  Two of the touchdowns came on passes from Dan Griffin to Alex Boseman  (Sr., Brandywine, MD), giving the pair 81 yards and two touchdowns for the half.  The other three touchdowns resulted from rushing plays by Warren Anderson (Sr., Vienna, VA), Dan Griffin, and Bryan Woolson (Sr., White Hall, MD).  The first half ended by a score of 42-0.

The second half started in similar fashion with the Eagles offense going three and out on their first two possessions.  Despite a 40 yard punt by Justin Lindie downing the ball at the Salisbury 11 yard line, the Sea Gulls scored on their first drive of the half on a 6-yard rush by Joe Benedetti (So., Langhorne, PA).  On their second drive of the quarter, Salisbury was able to move from their own 34 yard line to the end zone, culminating in a one yard rush by Nick Coates (Sr., Huntingtown, MD).

Husson's next drive was cut short by an interception by Earl Harris (So., Upper Marlboro, MD) that was returned 47 yards to the Husson 4 yard line.  Harris then went in on offense and scored on the next play, giving Salisbury a 70 point lead.

The Sea Gulls started the fourth quarter with a 74 yard touchdown pass by backup quarterback Joey Jones (Fy., Baltimore, MD) to receiver Ross Flanigan (So., Ijamsville, MD).  The Eagles started the fourth quarter with an eight play drive that was cut short when backup quarterback Kash Keezer (So., Veazie, ME) got leveled while throwing the ball resulting in an interception by Andre Carter (Fy., Huntington, MD) who returned the ball 79 yards for a touchdown.

The Eagles defense kept fighting and eventually forced a fumble late in the fourth quarter.  Starting on their own 32 yard line, Kash Keezer was able to spark the offense completing passes of 46 and 30 yards, the ladder of which resulted in Husson's first points of the season.  This touchdown was the last of the game for either team, making the end result 84-7 in favor of Salisbury.

The Husson Eagles look forward to beginning conference play next Saturday when they travel to SUNY-Maritime in New York.  The next home game for the Eagles is their homecoming game against Gallaudet University at 12:00 at Winkin Complex.
