UW-Stout 27, Jamestown 24

More news about: UW-Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. — Richard Marteney's 34-yard field goal with about a minute remaining gave UW-Stout the margin of victory, and Zach Pomputis' interception seconds later sealed the 27-24 win over Jamestown College Saturday at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.

From the beginning, it didn't look like this one would turn into a nail-biter.

On Stout's first play from scrimmage, quarterback Ross Carey found receiver #Antawan# Walker (Sr, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla) for a 69-yard touchdown strike.

But the Jimmies (1-1) answered back with consecutive field goals in the first quarter to pull to within 7-6.

Marteney stretched the lead slightly, 10-6, for Stout (1-1) with a 32 yard field goal early in the second quarter, but Nate Nygard nullified that four minutes later with a 34-yard field goal. Stout jumped out to a 17-9 hafltime lead when tight end Patrick Mengelkoch hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Carey.

The Jimmies pulled to within a point on a Michael Beehler to Max Boe 66-yard touchdown pass. The pair hooked up nine times on the day, with Boe slicing and dicing for 243 receiving yards.

Stout put together a 12-play, 94 yard drive over the course of the end of the third quarter and capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run by Craig Warminski 15 seconds into the fourth quarter, giving Stout a 24-16 lead.

The Jimmies came back to tie the game after Stout missed a late fourth quarter field goal, going 80 yards in seven plays as Boe recorded his second TD of the day, this one 20 yards.

Stout set up what would be the game winner when Warminski took the ensuing kickoff 28 yards, then took a catch 33 yards to Jamestown 31. A 12-yard reception by Mengelkoch put the ball on the 20 and Carlos Concepcion rushed to the 16. Two plays later Marteney booted the kick.

The Jimmies had just over a minute and Beehler connected with Boe to the Jamestown 37. Beehler was picked off by Pomputis at the Stout 41 to effectively end the game.

Jamestown finished with 439 total yards, 324 by passing, 115 by rushing. Boe and Beehler accounted for the majority of the yardage.

Stout finished with 404 total yards, 275 in the air, 129 on the ground. Mengelkoch had a team-high six receptions for 74 yards. Walker had three catches for 85 yards and Warminski had four grabs for 56 yards. Eight different Stout players had at least one reception

Stout will host Eureka College, Saturday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
