PINEVILLE, La. — The Hawks overcame adversity and found a
way to win on the road in overtime behind Courtney Moss's
single game school-record fourth touchdown run of the game.
Huntingdon gained 571 total yards in offense in the battle, while
the Wildcats put up 588 total yards in the 62-56 shoot-out in
Pineville.
In the first half, the Wildcats were able to answer on their
opening drive. The drive consisted of a seven play 60-yard drive.
Senior quarterback Ben McLaughlin hit senior wide receiver Jordan
Rideaux for a 23-yard touchdown pass, with 12:10 to play in the
first quarter.
The Hawks answered quickly with an eight-play 57-yard drive.
Courtney Moss scored on a one-yard touchdown run. The run by Moss
tied the game up 7-7, with 8:37 to play in the first quarter.
Huntingdon found the end zone on their next possession after
stopping the Wildcats. Plagenhoef led the Hawks on a six-play
80-yard drive, including a 26-yard run from Courtney Moss. The
score put the Hawks up 14-7, with 4:03 to play in first
quarter.
After a defensive stop by Huntingdon, the Hawks added another
score to put the lead 21-7 with under two minutes to play.
Plagenhoef found Cody Pearcy a step ahead of the defender for a
30-yard touchdown reception.
The Wildcats responded after giving up 21-points in the first
quarter, with two touchdowns in the beginning of the second
quarter. The scores came off of a CerDerrick Tyson 2-yard run and a
Darnell Williams 8-yard rushing touchdown, to tie the game up
21-21.
Huntingdon regained the lead on a five-play 56-yard dirve capped
off by Courtney Moss's third touchdown score of the day. The
Hawks took a 28-21 lead with 8:26 to play in the first half.
The Wildcats answered back with an impressive eight-play 65-yard
drive. The score came when Ben McLaughlin found DeMario Parker for
a 21-yard touchdown pass and catch. Justin Brown was able to block
the Wildcats extra-point to keep Huntingdon's lead into the
half, 28-27.
In the second-half, Huntingdon opened the half with a quick score
on a two-play 60-yard drive. Plagenhoef connected with junior Cody
Pearcy for a 51-yard touchdown pass with 11:18 to go in the third
quarter to extend the lead, 35-27.
The Wildcats scored on their next possession in the third quarter
with 8:17, after a four-play 60-yard drive. Ben McLaughlin hit
Justin Usey on a 14-yard touchdown pass to bring the Wildcats
within two-points, 35-33.
Huntingdon came out and forced the Wildcats to punt on their next
possession. Freshman Michael Willborn blocked the punt and the
Hawks took over at the Louisiana College 13-yard line. Two plays
later, Caleb McCants got the score for the Hawks on a six-yard run,
putting the lead to 42-33 at the end of the third quarter.
The Hawks found the end zone again with 13:02 to play in the
fourth-quarter on a 22-yard run by Caleb McCants to extend the lead
to 49-33.
Louisiana College responded with a four-play 73-yard dirve. Chad
Hindman ran into the end zone from one-yard out to close the gap to
49-40. The wildcats converted on a two-point conversion to make it
an eight-point game, 49-41.
The Wildcats tied the game after a touchdown pass from Ben
McLaughlin to Matt Albrecht from 32-yards out. After a trick play
to convert and tie the ball game 49-49 with 8:35 in the fourth
quarter.
The Wildcats' Robert Wilson forced Plagenhoef to fumble and
Nate Janzen returned the fumble 51-yards for the touchdown and lead
for the Wildcats, 56-49 with 7:09 to play in the game. The score
put Louisiana College in front for the first time since the very
first score of the game.
Huntingdon found the end zone with 4:30 to play when Plagenhoef
hooked up with Willie McDowell for a 29-yard receiving touchdown to
tie the game up 56-56 in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, the Hawks held the Wildcats to a 35-yard field goal
attempt on their first possession, which was missed wide left by
Josh Bonadona. Huntingdon gets the win off of a Courtney Moss
18-yard touchdown run down the left sideline in overtime,
62-56.
Plagenhoef finished 22-of-32 for 370 yards, including 3 touchdowns
with one interception on the day. Cody Pearcy led the team with 9
catches for 154 yards with two touchdowns. Courtney Moss led the
Hawks with 66 yards on 12 carries for a Huntingdon single game
record 4 rushing touchdowns on the day, followed by Caleb McCants
with 56 yards on 12 carries, including two touchdowns.
The Wildcats were led by, senior Ben McLaughlin who was 27-of-50
for 489 yards with 4 touchdown passes. Senior Chad Hindman led the
running game with 50 total yards on nine carries for one touchdown.
Louisiana College had two wide receivers eclipse the 100-yard mark
on the day, including Jordan Rideaux six receptions for 137 yards
for one score and DeMario Parker 114 yards on four receptions with
one touchdown.
Huntingdon will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 18, in the
Capital City Classic against Faulkner. Kickoff is scheduled for 7
p.m. at Crampton Bowl.
