SPEARFISH, S.D. — Trailing 7-0 heading into the fourth
quarter, UW-Stout tied the game and sent it into overtime. But the
Blue Devils lost to Black Hills State, 14-13, in the overtime
period.
Quarterback Ross Carey found Antawan Walker midway through the
fourth quarter to tie the game. Then, on the first play of
overtime, Carey hit tailback Craig Warminski with a 25-yard scoring
strike, but the extra point sailed wide..
The Yellowjackets (1-1) drove the 25 yards and Drew Hodgs carried
in from the one, then made the extra point for the win.
The game was scoreless after the first half, but Black Hills
scored on a 12-play, 64-yard drive with five minutes remaining in
the third quarter when Hodgs wrapped up the drive with 14-yard
touchdown pass to Dustin Worthington.
The Blue Devils (0-1) responded with their own big drive in the
fourth quarter after Cody Price sacked Hodgs on fourth down at the
Stout 37.
Carey completed eight passes for 57 yards in a 15-play, 63-yard
drive, then capped off the drive with a five yard strike to
Walker.
In overtime, Stout needed one play to score, while the
Yellowjackets needed eight and scored on fourth and one for the
win.
Stout tallied 281 total yards, with Carey completing 27-of-44
passes for 235 yards and two TDs. The Blue Devils were held to 46
rushing yards with Warminski getting 37 yards, 24 of that coming on
one play. Carey was sacked seven times. Warminski hauled in a
career-high seven catches for 74 yards. Walker had nine catches for
64 yards.
The Blue Devil defense held Black Hills to 189 total yards, 106
passing, 83 rushing.
Aaron Kobes, who switched from offense to defense, had a team high
12 tackles, nine solo for Stout. Trevor Fiege had nine tackles and
Adam Churchill eight. Ryan Pearcy had five tackles and a sack.
Stout will host Jamestown State, Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
Jamestown is in the same conference as Black Hills State.
