ST. PAUL, Minn. — Junior QB Dakota Tracy passed for two
touchdowns to tight end Logan Marks and ran for another score as
the No. 5-ranked Tommies (2-0) topped the visiting Falcons (0-2) in
Saturday's non-conference football game before a crowd of
4,000-plus at UST's O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
St. Thomas had no turnovers and won its ninth consecutive home
game dating back to November 2008. Trailing 3-0, the Toms scored
three touchdowns in an 8:49 span of the second and third quarters
to take a 20-3 lead.
Tracy completed 9-of-12 passes for 96 yards. Greg Morse 6-for-8
for 82 yards, and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Nick Gleisner. Ricky
Margarit had three catches for 77 yards. Fritz Waldvogel had 118
all-purpose yards on 11 touches and went over 2,000 career
receiving yards. Senior All-American running back Ben Wartman had
seven carries for 53 yards but was slowed by an injury and had a
streak of 100-yard rushing games end at eight. Junior RB Colin
Tobin had 14 carries for 76 yards.
Taylor Edwards had 108 yards on 28 carries for River Falls, which
had a 36-24 minute advantage in time of possession but couldn't
reach the end zone.
UST's Tommy Becker had 10 tackles and forced the game's only
turnover, a fumble on a strip of the Falcon QB who had just
converted a 3rd-down run. Willy Baregi recovered the loose ball at
the Falcon 34-yard line with 3:23 left in the half, and six plays
later St. Thomas scored its second touchdown.
UST held the Falcons to their lowest scoring output in 14 games as
the Toms allowed just one trip inside the red zone.
River Falls had an 18-play drive in the first and second quarters
that covered 79 yards and drained 9:36 on the clock. But the
Falcons had a 4th-and-inches at the Tommie four and settled for
Chad Blair's 21-yard field goal.
