Blue Streaks win, set up rematch with Mount Union

Quarterback Tom Arth ran for a 6-yard touchdown in the first overtime to lead John Carroll to a 16-10 victory against Brockport State in an NCAA Division III quarterfinal on Saturday at the University of Rochester's Fauver Stadium.

The Blue Streaks (12-1) advance to next week's semifinal at Mount Union, which defeated Wabash 45-16 Saturday. Both Mount Union and John Carroll compete in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll lost 35-16 to Mount Union on Oct. 19. Brockport finishes 10-3.

The Golden Eagles had a chance to win the game in the final seconds of regulation. Mike Condello forced an Arth fumble and Brockport's Billy Glynn recovered at the John Carroll 9. Three plays later, with eight seconds remaining, Mike Laney attempted a 23-yard field goal, but it was blocked by John Carroll defensive back Joey Hunt.

Arth was 11-for-24 for 158 yards and a touchdown, while Ryan DeGeorge had 82 yards on 23 carries for the Blue Streaks. Senior Adam Webster led the Golden Eagles with 82 yards on 30 carries, and had his 100-yard rushing streak snapped at seven straight.

Senior wide receiver Jeff Lerner gave the Blue Streaks a 7-0 lead when he caught a 12-yard pass from Arth at 11:02 of the first quarter. It capped a three-play, 18-yard drive that took 1:22. John Carroll started the drive after senior linebacker Chris Cubero recovered a Brockport fumble at the Brockport 19.

Laney put the Golden Eagles on the board with a 40-yard field goal with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter. Brockport capped a 13-play, 42-yard drive that took six minutes and 16 seconds.

John Carroll took a 10-3 lead when George Theofilos (Warren, OH/Howland) kicked a 19-yard field goal with 10:07 left in the second quarter. The 10-play, 76-yard drive that took 4:53 featured a 34-yard pass from Arth to Adam Thierrien on a third-and-3 to bring it to the Brockport 38.

Just six seconds into the fourth quarter, Matt Boorom caught a 16-yard pass from freshman quarterback Chet Holcomb to tie it at 10-10. Brockport took 12 plays and went 71 yards on a drive that took 5:08. Holcomb's pass came on a third-and-goal. On a third-and-1, Webster ran for 5 yards to bring it to the John Carroll 14. Webster had eight plays and 18 yards on the drive.

Brockport won the toss in overtime and elected to be on offense in the bottom in the first overtime. DeGeorge had five rushes for 13 yards on the game-winning drive, and had a 3-yard run on third-and-1 at the Brockport 16. After Arth scored on the 6-yard run, Brockport went on offense and on the fourth play, Billy Spalik was stopped for no gain at the John Carroll 15 to end the game.

John Carroll had 240 yards of offense on the day against one of the nation's top defenses, and held Brockport to 190 total yards.
