Quick Hits: Our predictions for Week 8

The game between Washington & Jefferson and Westminster (Pa.) is definitely a game to watch. Is it a game with upset potential?

Week 8 features a PAC championship rematch with upset potential and the best two teams in Southern California are set to duel under the lights, and we're keeping eyes on some of the best run defenses in the country. Can you look ahead a week? Not all panelists agree! Our Quick Hits team is back with a six pack of questions to get you ready for Saturday's action.

Our regular crew is Greg Thomas, Pat Coleman, Ryan Tipps, Adam Turer, Frank Rossi, plus a guest. This week that guest is Hobart alum and Frank's co-host of the In The D3FB Huddle, James Baker. You can give James a follow on Twitter @D3FBHuddle for links to their coverage of Division III football.

Which game is the Game of the Week?

Greg Thomas head shot Greg's take: Chapman at Redlands. Chapman is coming off their best all around game of the season in Week 7, while Redlands has been cruising along after their early season loss to Linfield. Chapman feels like the slightly better side, but it's hard to win at Ted Runner Stadium. The #D3SoCalSoLate crowd should be treated to an excellent game here.
Pat Coleman head shot Pat's take: Catholic at Merchant Marine. Sticking with my pick from the podcast on Monday and looking forward to seeing my alma mater play in a meaningful game. Teams tied for first in the NEWMAC. For people looking for Top 25 comparison, remember that Randolph-Macon, currently receiving the 30th-most votes, handled Catholic easily in Week 2.
Adam Turer head shot Adam's take: Chapman at Redlands. Both teams come in 5-1 but are outside the Top 25. The winner will be alone in first place atop the SCIAC.
Ryan Tipps head shot Ryan's take: UW-Stout at No. 14 UW-La Crosse. If you think the WIAC leaderboard is close to being settled, think again.
Frank Rossi head shot Frank's take: Westminster (Pa.) at No. 11 W&J. Their Spring PAC Championship Game was a classic, and the implications for the PAC are huge this season. This game starts the real gauntlet run for W&J, but it is going to be a challenge on both sides of the ball.
James' take: Westminster (Pa.) at No. 11 Washington & Jefferson. It’s a rematch of last spring’s exciting PAC championship game that Westminster won 27-20. W&J (6-0, 5-0) appears to be the favorite this fall given the Titans (4-2, 4-1) surprising loss to Carnegie Mellon in Week 6. The Presidents have had an extra week of preparation for this big matchup given their bye in Week 7 but this is a must-win / playoff elimination game for Westminster.

Which Top 25 team is most likely to be upset?

Greg Thomas head shot Greg's take: No. 24 John Carroll. I had a couple of choices here, but the Blue Streaks are the only Top 25 team in a quasi-vulnerable mathcup that are on the road. Marietta has been flirting around with a breakthrough win for a few seasons now and Saturday might see the Pioneers finally get one.
Pat Coleman head shot Pat's take: No. 24 John Carroll. I suspect Marietta is not satisfied with its 3-3 record so far this season, and John Carroll has, at times, not blown away weaker opponents the way one might have expected. That makes this a distinct possibility.
Adam Turer head shot Adam's take: No. 14 UW-La Crosse, vs. UW-Stout. These teams come in with nearly identical point differentials on the season and each team's sole loss was to a juggernaut (UW-Whitewater, D-II Grand Valley State). A toss up, despite the rankings.
Ryan Tipps head shot Ryan's take: No. 11 Washington and Jefferson. I don't think Westminster, which has alternatively shown flashes of being both hot and cold this season, will actually pull off the upset, but this is the game where one is most likely.
Frank Rossi head shot Frank's take: No. 11 Washington and Jefferson. It really depends on which Westminster team shows up. The CMU loss was perplexing, but the rebound last week shows the offense can still click. The game has a Hopkins/Muhlenberg feel to it.
James' take: No. 14 UW-La Crosse. While Westminster beating W&J would qualify as an upset, it really wouldn’t surprise me so I’m going with UW-Stout. The Blue Devils only loss so far this season has been against #3 UW-Whitewater and the Eagles were (really) lucky to avoid a loss last weekend to UW-Platteville (1-5, 0-3). I think UW-Stout QB Sean Borderding might have the arm to give the Devils a chance to break an 8-game losing streak to La Crosse.

Which of Division III's five stingiest rush defenses will yield the fewest rush yards in Week 8?

Greg Thomas head shot Greg's take: Trinity (Texas). The Trinity Tigers have the division's top ranked rush defense and Sewanee averages just 2.55 yards per rush this season. This is a recipe for another lockdown day for the Trinity defense.
Pat Coleman head shot Pat's take: Brockport every day and twice on Saturday. Hartwick's running stats were definitely affected by the rain against Cortland last week but Brockport will bring the storm up front and sack yardage counts against the rushing total in college, so ...
Adam Turer head shot Adam's take: Trinity (Texas). Sewanee's offense has been shut out three times already this season and they'll have to play from behind.
Ryan Tipps head shot Ryan's take: Trinity (Texas), against Sewanee. Sewanee has been shut out three times already this year, which just happens to be against the only three opponents they've played who currently have winning records. It seems unlikely they'll get any breathing room from Trinity.
Frank Rossi head shot Frank's take: Delaware Valley. Misericordia is averaging less than 300 yards of offense per game, and it won't get any easier vs. the toughest defense they'll see this season.
James' take: Brockport. Cortland held Hartwick (the Golden Eagles’ Week 8 opponent) to minus-13 rushing yards last weekend. Brockport’s rush defense is arguably better, at least based on the stat book.

Which game are you following that no one else on the panel is following?

Greg Thomas head shot Greg's take: Wooster at Denison. There are a couple of fun trophy games out there this week and the Scots and Big Red will play for the Old Red Lantern on Saturday. Denison has won six in a row in this series, but Wooster enters with momentum after an exciting win at Wabash last week. These are two good offenses so don't be surprised to see them..light up the scoreboard.
Pat Coleman head shot Pat's take: Husson at University of New England. I am a sucker for a trophy game, and these two schools in the state of Maine came up with a good idea. It's the Lobster Trap game, and hardly a trap game for either school as they are tied at 1-1 in the CCC standings.
Adam Turer head shot Adam's take: Dubuque at Wartburg. The Spartans haven't defeated the Knights since 2015. Wartburg needs a win to keep any hopes of an ARC title and playoff berth alive.
Ryan Tipps head shot Ryan's take: Ferrum at Hampden-Sydney. The Panthers haven't been in a conference title discussion much over the past decade, and certainly not since joining the ODAC in 2018. But they've been one of the lowest-key one-loss teams around, with all of their wins coming by no more than one score.
Frank Rossi head shot Frank's take: Endicott at Salve Regina. This is Salve Regina's chance to create complete havoc in the CCC standings at home, but an Endicott team that seems to have settled in on Mike Ingraffia as QB has been on a roll lately.
James' take: Dean vs. Anna Maria. The AMCATs are a program best 4-1 and 2-0 in the ECFC. A win over the Bulldogs, 2019 ECFC champs, would be Anna Maria’s 5th straight and set up a potential winter-take-Pool A-all between Coach Mulrooney’s AMCATs and the Bison of Gallaudet in Week 10.

Will either North Park or Bowdoin turn long losing streaks into winning streaks tomorrow?

Greg Thomas head shot Greg's take: I'll take both! I'm buying the week-to-week improvement for Bowdoin with their trio of sophomore offensive standouts Andrew Boel, Andre Eden, and Colton Fahey. Out in Chicago, I think we'll see first year quarterback Matt Eck sling the ball all over Hedstrand Field and delivery a second straight win for North Park over Elmhurst.
Pat Coleman head shot Pat's take: Por que no los dos? Going with both because I do favor both Bowdoin and North Park on Saturday.
Adam Turer head shot Adam's take: North Park gets it done against Elmhurst, one of the lowest-scoring teams in the nation.
Ryan Tipps head shot Ryan's take: Both of these teams should come away with their second win in a row. Neither of last week's victories felt "flukey" or "unearned," and they have what they need to do it again.
Frank Rossi head shot Frank's take: Bowdoin will, after Tufts suffered a letdown against Wesleyan a week ago. North Park also will, as Elmhurst just can't seem to score points this season.
James' take: While I’m a big fan of Coach Hammer, Tufts will be a challenging team to beat Saturday. The Jumbos have lost 3 games by 7 points and are certainly much better than their 0-5 record would otherwise indicate. Given that, I like the Vikings, who are riding a little momentum after last weekend’s surprising 33-30 upset over Carthage.

Who is probably safe to look ahead to next week?

Greg Thomas head shot Greg's take: Monmouth has won 39 consecutive MWC games and they're going to make it 40 this weekend against Cornell ahead of what I expect with be a matchup with undefeated Lake Forest next week.
Pat Coleman head shot Pat's take: SUNY-Maritime. The Privateers have a bye on Saturday and play Dean in Week 9. Certainly not Howard Payne, which has Belhaven this week before Hardin-Simmons next Saturday. Belhaven is 7-4 in games played in 2021.
Adam Turer head shot Adam's take: Nobody, ever. Coaches are gonna be real upset with this question, Greg. Any Given Saturday!
Ryan Tipps head shot Ryan's take: No one is! I don't care how cupcake-ish you feel this week's team is vs. next week's, looking ahead is too often a recipe for disaster.
Frank Rossi head shot Frank's take: No. 16 Ithaca (vs. Buffalo State). It's been a rough season for the Bengals, and playing on the grass at Butterfield won't make it any easier. The Bombers should sail through in this game.
James' take: Plenty of teams to choose from here, but I’ll go with No. 21 Trinity (Texas) who faces Sewanee (0-6, 0-3). These poor Tigers have lost their last three games by a combined 150 points (163-13).
