North Carolina Wesleyan has announced the resignation of football coach Mark Henninger, who has accepted the same position at Marian in his hometown of Indianapolis.
Marian went 12-1 this past season and won the NAIA title.
Henninger was the second head coach in NCWC football history, and in five seasons at the helm, he guided the Battling Bishops to a 26-25 mark, 22-13 in the USA South, including two league titles and an NCAA playoff berth. Including four years as assistant coach, Henninger helped Wesleyan accumulate a 40-22 conference mark and a trio of titles since the program's inception.
Perhaps his most memorable season as head coach came in 2009 when Henninger earned USA South Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bishops to a perfect 7-0 conference mark for the second time in three seasons. He had an unprecedented ten First Team All-Conference selections, which included the league's offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year and defensive rookie of the year.
"I am excited for Mark and his family to return to the Hoosier state, and at the same time, disappointed to see him leave," said NCWC vice president for athletics John Thompson. "I appreciate all that he has done in our department since the inception of football and his arrival in December 2003."
A national search for Henninger's replacement at N.C. Wesleyan is already underway.
