Mike Zweifel caught 11 pases for 94 yards and two touchdows in the first half alone and caught his 12th pass of the day early in the second half to pass former Westminster (Mo.) receiver Scott Pingel for the most receptions in NCAA football history.

Zweifel was initially credited with a reception on a backwards lateral in the first half for a 12th first-half reception, but it was later corrected. By rule, backwards laterals are carries. He had 15 carries for 148 yards and two touchdowns when he was removed from the game in the third quarter. Video below, as well as Mike Zweifel's take.

Monmouth quarterback Alex Tanney entered the day needing just two touchdown passes to break the record set by Westminster (Mo.) quarterback Justin Peery, Pingel's teammate, and he got three when the Scots defeated Carroll 69-14

Tanney connected with fellow senior Mike Blodgett for two quick scores in the first quarter to eclipse the previous record of 148 career TD passes shared by Division III’s Justin Peery of Westminster and Division II’s Jimmy Terwilliger of East Stroudsburg. The first – a 64-yarder – came on the first play of the Scots third possession. The next capped a seven-play, 49-yard drive.

Tanney also moved into second place in career passing yards by a Division III quarterback. Tanney completed 14 of 22 passes for 265 yards to pull within 324 yards of the career mark set by Josh Vogelbach of Guilford. He’ll need to do a little better than his 322 yard-per-game average next weekend in order to claim that record.
