A special statistical spotlight for rivalry week, where we look at some of the key statistical performances from the weekend in Division III football, highlighting one from a storied rivalry game in each region.

Jacob Caron and Robert Maki grew up together, came in to Pomona-Pitzer together and left it all out on the field on Saturday, albeit on the wrong end of a 31-30 overtime loss to on-campus rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Maki caught 13 of Caron’s completed passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, while Caron was 30-for-52 passing for 257 yards. The game ended with the ball in Caron’s hands as he was stopped short of the goal on a two-point conversion in the extra session. Caron threw for 8,408 career yards as a four-year starter in the nine-game SCIAC, while Maki caught 256 career passes for 3,070 yards and 19 TDs.

Justin Autera made sure his team lived to play another home game and got a jug for this team in the process. The Cortland State sophomore ran for 232 yards, the most in the history of the Cortaca Jug game, averaging 6.3 yards per carry and scoring two touchdowns in the Red Dragons’ 20-17 win.

Wabash’s defense didn’t block any punts on Saturday in the Monon Bell game. But then again, it didn’t need to. Punter Adam Hill let one snap squirt through his fingers and saw another sail over his head, each leading to quick Wabash touchdowns in the 47-0 blowout. Wabash pulled out to a 55-53-9 lead in the all-time series.

In The Game, Hampden-Sydney took a defensive stance against Randolph-Macon, holding the Yellow Jackets to 110 yards rushing and 2.6 yards per carry, about half of their pregame averages. And while the Tigers’ defense was forcing back-to-back three-and-outs followed by a five-play, 7-yard drive, the Tiger offense ended the first half with three consecutive touchdowns and scored on its first two drives of the second half as well to take a 31-21 lead in a game it went on to win 31-28.
