Each week during the regular season we look at some of the key
statistical performances from the weekend in Division III football,
highlighting one per region.
Bill Doody had two interceptions for Hampden-Sydney, including one
inside his own 10-yard line to stop a North Carolina Wesleyan drive
in a 21-19 win. He finished with seven tackles, five solo, and had
four pass breakups.
Beloit quarterback Brian Maughn made a complete turnaround, going
from a 4-for-23 performance against St. Norbert in 2009 to a
28-for-36 afternoon, passing for 357 yards in his Buccaneers' 34-31
win against the Green Knights on Saturday. Maughn led a final drive
of 65 yards in seven plays in just 47 seconds to set up Mat Kahl's
22-yard game-winning field goal.
Adrian's turnaround was of a quicker nature. A week after
getting shut out by defending national champion UW-Whitewater, the
Bulldogs beat Defiance 40-14 led by 208 yards rushing from Jared
Edwards and 138 from Justin Hemm. Hemm averaged 17.2 yards per
carry.
The Merchant Marine Academy defense seemingly did enough to win,
pitching a shutout, recording 10 tackles for loss and holding Coast
Guard to 107 total yards, including minus-3 rushing yards. But
Coast Guard came through on special teams with a kickoff return to
open the game and added a 39-yard field goal after a Merchant
Marine turnover to account for all the points in a 10-8 win.
