D-III out of 2008 Aztec Bowl

St. John Fisher's Brennan Fortune, Springfield's Chris Sharpe and Alfred's Don Miller celebrated winning the 2007 Aztec Bowl. Nobody from Division III will have the chance to do so this year.

Due to a last-minute change in the AFCA's long-standing agreement with Mexico's college football federation (ONEFA) the Division III national team will not be participating in the Aztec Bowl this year.

The AFCA was informed last week that ONEFA would not honor its financial obligations as the host country. Without sufficient time to secure funding to cover the additional costs ONEFA demanded the AFCA take responsibility for the decision has been made not to send a squad to Mexico this year.

"The decision not to compete in this year's Aztec Bowl was a difficult one to arrive at but we were left with no other choice given the late date." AFCA executive director Grant Teaff said. "This game has become a tremendous showcase for Division III football players and we're proud to have given so many outstanding young men a chance to finish their college football careers in such a unique event. We hope to return to Mexico in 2009."

The United States is 10-1 in its 11 meetings with Mexico's college national team in the Aztec Bowl, including a 37-19 win in Chihuahua in 2007. Mexico's lone win was a 34-31 victory in 2003 in Cancun.
