Berg reaches the tip of Augsburg's record book

Quarterback Jordan Berg became Augsburg's all-time leading passer on Saturday, throwing for 311 yards as the Auggies defeated Hamline 24-21.

Already the school's record-holder for career passing touchdowns (57) and completions (622), Berg eclipsed the remaining two career passing records on Saturday -- passing attempts (1,038) and passing yardage (6,818). Both previous records were held by Derrin Lamker (1993-97, 1,022 pass attempts and 6,624 passing yards).

Berg completed 28 of 40 passes for 311 yards and a touchdown, despite being picked off three times.

Berg has at least six more games in which to distance himself in first place and possibly a playoff game pending the result of the Auggies already impressive 4-0 start.

We're going streaking ...

UW-Whitewater's 31-0 blanking of UW-La Crosse on Saturday upped its win streak in WIAC play to 23 consecutive games. Ironically, the Warhawks' last loss came at the hands of UW-La Crosse in the final game of 2004. The Warhawks have also won twenty-seven straight at Perkins Stadium.

Who turned the lights out?

Cal Lutheran and Whittier were delayed 20 minutes in the fourth quarter on Saturday do to a power outage at the stadium. When the lights were on, Cal Lutheran wasted no time piling up points and building a 25-7 lead. They punched in one more touchdown in the fourth quarter for the 32-7 final.

Still looking

St. Scholastica is still looking for its first win as a football program after losing 51-13 to Crown. The loss was the Saints' first home loss and first Homecoming loss in its short three game history. The Saints will look for win No. 1 at Macalester next week.

Homecoming keeps the points coming

UW-Stout beat UW-Platteville 46-31 in the highest scoring Homecoming game in Pioneer history Saturday in front of 3,133 at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. The Blue Devils scored the first 20 points of the second half, breaking open a tight first half in which Stout led 19-17. The 77 combined points were the most in 80 Homecoming games, topping the 74 points in the Pioneers' 56-18 win over UW-Whitewater in 1976.

Knight runner

Martin Luther ran 49 plays on offense against Minnesota Morris in their 35-7 victory on Saturday -- only one was a pass. The Knights tallied 365 yards rushing on 48 plays and their one passing attempt went incomplete. Their predictable offense has them sitting at 4-1 on the season.

Can I be Frank with you

It's been a while since Carleton picked up a win against St. Olaf in their storied intra-town rivalry. This year Knights senior wide receiver Matt Frank was the difference hauling in 11 catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns in the Carleton victory. This was his eighth career 100-yard receiving game, and he now sits fourth on the program's receiving chart with 2,195 yards.

Carleton's victory was snapped the Oles' 11-game winning streak in the series, returning the Goat Trophy to the Knights for the first time since 1996

The Knights are 4-0 for the first time since 1992 and sit in a tie atop the MIAC standings with Concordia and Augsburg.
McGrew's production grows

For the second straight game Loras running back Alex McGrew has posted three touchdowns in leading the Duhawks to two straight IIAC victories -- they had one in all of 2007. McGrew now has 272 yards rushing and six touchdowns and trails only Adam Reutzel from Simpson in rushing yards per game.

"A huge win for the program; The defense could not have played better," said Carleton head coach Kurt Ramler after beating St. Olaf 21-7. "If I could pick one thing, it was to get this win for the seniors. I'm incredibly proud of the team, and this is a sign that our program is on the rise."

"No doubt it's a tough loss," said Simpson coach Jim Glogowski after a 20-17 loss to Coe. "I told the kids at the end of the game we got to come out ready to go off the bat instead of finding ourselves down 14-0."
