SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior running back Jermaine Carn had 113 yards and two touchdowns and Brian Alebiosu made 15 tackles to lead Union College to a 28-13 non-league football victory over Western Connecticut State University at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon.The win was the first for first year head coach Jeff Behrman. It was Union’s first victory since a 59-32 win at home over Merchant Marine on November 8, 2014.
The Dutchmen defense produced four interceptions and six sacks for losses of 40 yards, and nine overall tackles for losses. Union has allowed just 22 points in the two games. Hunter Ordukhanyan had 14 a career best 14 tackles and a sack while Jack Reilly had two sacks for 16 yards and a 41 yard interception for a touchdown. Jake Lombardo had a 56 yard interception return for a touchdown.Connor Kinzelmann had 88 yards rushing on 17 carries, while Carn had 16 carries. Tyler Barnes had eight punts for a 43.0 yard average.Quinn Fleeting led the Colonials with 276 yards on 28 completions for 48 yards and two TDs. Khalil Patterson had eight carries for 52 yards and Kevin Maxen had 11 tackles.Union opened the scoring late in the first quarter. On a first down from the Dutchmen-27, Carn broke through right up the middle and wasn’t caught, dashing 73 yards for the touchdown. It was the longest run of the career for the senior co-captain. After Western took over, on the second play Justin Waller intercepted at the Colonials-41. On the Union drive that followed, Carn ran in from three yards out and after a six play, 42 yard drive in 2:38, the Dutchmen had a 14-0 lead with 1:29 left in the first quarter.But the first quarter scoring wasn’t done. On Western’s third play of the drive, on a third and five, Lombardo intercepted a pass at the Union 44 and raced up the right sidelines for the touchdown and a 21-0 lead as the quarter time expired.The Colonials started a drive with 11:08 remaining in the second quarter. It took 12 plays and 75 yards in 5:45 and was capped by a Fleeting pass to Austin Calamita for 14 yards for the score. The point after attempt failed and it was 21-6 with 5:23 left in the half.Western made it an eight point game with 6:48 remaining in the third period. Fleeting hit Lucas DeSouza for 26 yards on a third and 14 for a 21-13 score. It was a nine play, 64 yard drive that consumed 4:39.Another big turnover produced by Union ended a threat with 8:58 remaining in the fourth. On the second play of a drive at the Colonials-37, Reilly intercepted a pass and returned it 41 yards for a 28-13 lead. The Colonials had a long drive that started at their own 14 with 4:45 to play in the fourth. But on the 14th play of the drive (that produced 62 yards in 3:28), a pass was incomplete on fourth down and Union took over with 1:17 to play at the Union-24.The Dutchmen are home again next week to host Western New England at 12 p.m., while the Colonials host Plymouth State at 12 p.m.
