The Gettysburg football program and athletic director Mike Mattia have announced changes to the coaching staff with head coach Kevin Burke parting ways with the program after two seasons at the helm.
In a corresponding move, assistant coach and co-defensive coordinator Mike Hoyt was named the interim head coach effective immediately. A national search will be conducted in the coming weeks to find the next head coach of the Bullets.
The Bullets were 2-18 over the past two seasons.
Burke spent the last 16 years with the Orange and Blue, first as offensive coordinator under former head coach Barry Streeter from 2004-17 and then as head coach during the past two campaigns. During his time as offensive coordinator, his teams led the Centennial Conference in total offense five times, rushing offense seven times, and passing offense twice. Burke helped the team make its only postseason appearance in the last 34 seasons with a trip to the ECAC Southwest Bowl in 2007.
"Gettysburg College and Bullets football have meant the world to myself and my family," said Burke. "I am extremely grateful for the time I have spent at Gettysburg as a student, assistant coach, and head coach. Thank you to all the players and coaches I have had the pleasure to work with especially Barry Streeter, a tremendous mentor, leader, and friend.
"I also want to thank the members of the Gettysburg College department of athletics. It has been an honor and a privilege to be colleagues and friends with such an amazing group of people. To our alumni, I thank you and encourage you to support the program and fully embrace the new leader of Bullets football. I love Gettysburg College and Bullets football and wish nothing but the best for the players and coaches."
Burke is a 1990 graduate of Gettysburg and competed in both football and track and field.
"I want to thank Coach Burke for all of his efforts and devotion to the Gettysburg football program," said Mattia. "He conducts himself with integrity and character on and off the field, and has always dedicated himself to the student-athletes."
Hoyt will oversee operation of the football program while a national search for a new head coach is carried out. Hoyt finished his second season with the Bullets in 2019.
