No. 13 Johns Hopkins saw a years-long conference winning streak snapped; Illinois Wesleyan picked up a big win; UW-Platteville survived UW-Stout and UW-Oshkosh pulled away from UW-Whitewater in Saturday's Top 25 action. Meanwhile, Jaquan Hemphill tied an NCAA Division III record with eight touchdowns in a game for Hardin-Simmons.
Ursinus sophomore Thomas Garlick scored on an electrifying 8-yard scamper with 20.1 seconds left to give the Bears a 21-17 victory over No. 13 Johns Hopkins, ending the Blue Jays' 45-game overall regular season winning streak and 40-game run in Centennial Conference play. Ursinus, at 5-0, has matched the best start in program history.

Trailing 17-14 after a 1-yard plunge by Johns Hopkins quarterback David Tammaro with 5:20 to play, Garlick and the Bears put together a 13-play, 74-yard drive. Backed up with a third-and-15 from the Ursinus 32, the sophomore fired a bullet to junior tight end Thomas Cardozo right at the sticks, and a 15-yard personal foul moved the ball up to the Blue Jays' 37. Stacey Gardner converted a third-and-2 from the 29, as well as a third-and-1 at the 11-yard line before a short carry and incomplete pass set up a third-and-7 from just inside the 8. Looking for a receiver, and with the pocket collapsing around him, Garlick took off up the middle and veered off to his left into open space and the end zone, sending a crowd of 3,500 into a frenzy.
"I'm proud of the way our kids fought today," said Ursinus coach Pete Gallagher. "They showed a lot of guts and determination and made the plays they needed to to win."
Illinois Wesleyan quarterback Brandon Bauer hit Zach Walsh for a 12-yard touchdown pass with six seconds left, capping a 13-play, 86-yard drive and lifting the No. 19 Titans past No. 4 Wheaton, 14-10, at Wheaton's McCully Stadium. Wheaton (4-1, 2-1) had taken a 10-7 lead on a 33-yard Stefan Knoerr field goal with 9:38 left in the game but was unabble to add to the lead, stalling out at the Titans' 35 with under three minutes left. After Illinois Wesleyan (4-1, 2-1) was pinned at its own 14, Bauer went 7-for-9 passing and added an 11-yard carry to lead the game-winning drive.
UW-Whitewater cut a 23-7 deficit to three points early in the fourth quarter, but gave up a deep ball to Sam Mentkowski on the next drive and threw an interception which led to another score. No. 3 UW-Oshkosh defeated the Warhawks 37-20, sending them to 1-3. The Warhawks had kept the score within striking distance by forcing three field goals after Mentkowski opened the scoring with a 96-yard touchdown catch-and-run from Brett Kasper. Marcus Hudson caught just his second pass of the season and took it 53 yards for a score to cut the deficit to 16-7 but the Warhawks' defense had no answer down the stretch.
Whitewater's losses are to the current No. 3, No. 19 and No. 21 teams, with No. 19 having defeated No. 4 on Saturday.
Jaquan Hemphill had a record-tying night as the Hardin-Simmons running back scored eight touchdowns, seven on the ground in an 80-42 win at East Texas Baptist. Hemphill ran for 293 yards on 26 carries and had a 64-yard touchdown reception as well, matching the record set by Carey Bender, the Gagliardi Trophy-winning running back for Coe. He scored eight TDs vs. Beloit on the final day of the 1994 regular season.
Linfield picked off Whitworth quarterback Ian Kolste three times, returning two of them for touchdowns, and that was all the defense needed as the No. 8 Wildcats defeated the No. 14 Pirates 38-9. Duke Mackle got the scoring going with a 56-yard return for a score less than 90 seconds into the game, and Jake Reimer added a 6-yard pick-six later in the game, while Chidubem Nnoli ran for a game-high 137 yardsin the victory.
UW-Stout led by 10 points early after Jed Schlegel returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, but Platteville scored 20 of the final 23 points and the No. 12 Pioneers rallied to defeat the No. 22 Blue Devils 34-27. The Pioneers took the lead for the first and only time with 7:18 left after Jack Eddy hit Mark Johnson for a 37-yard touchdown, but had to hold on as Stout got as far as the Platteville 14 in the closing seconds.
Evan Clark caught six passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns and the St. John's offense ground out enough rushing yards in the fourth quarter to keep Bethel's offense on the sidelines as the No. 9 Johnnies won, 21-13. Bethel, which is 1-4, cut St. John's lead to 21-13 with 9:10 left after a 58-yard touchdown drive, but the Johnnies ground out 10 plays in 5:45 before Jackson Erdmann threw an interception with 3:25 left. Bethel then went four-and-out.
No. 25 Wabash survived a back-and-forth game on the road to win 33-28 at Wooster. Gary Muntean threw four touchdown passes for Wooster but Weston Murphy's was the last as he hit Kirby Cox for a short score to cap an 18-play, 75-yard drive. The Little Giants dominated the time of possession in large part due to 161 yards from Ike James (37 carries) and 126 yards from Isaac Avant (16 carries).
With quarterback T.J. Josey moved back to wide receiver, the UMHB offense took a little while to get started, but turned a 16-0 halftime lead into a 44-10 win at Southwestern. All Kyle Jones did, at quarterback, was throw for a school-record 397 yards, and 307 of them came after halftime in the win. Josey caught three passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Pete Fredenburg won his 200th game, as the Cru's only coach has gone 200-38 in 19-plus seasons.
Brockport moved to 5-0 on the season as the No. 16 Golden Eagles rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Cortland 52-38. Joe Germinerio threw and ran for 360 yards, racking up six total touchdowns, while Tyree Brown had 179 receiving yards and a TD. No. 20 Alfred kept pace in the Empire 8, as the Saxons defense forced three turnovers and held visiting Buffalo State to 116 second-half yards in a 21-3 win. It was the first loss of the season for Buffalo State.
No. 2 Mount Union rolled out to a 27-0 lead and was never seriously threatened in a 43-14 win vs. Ohio Northern. D'Angelo Fulford was 11-for-17 passing, Jawanza Evans-Morris and Josh Petrucelli combined for 180 yards on 28 carries and Gabe Brown added Mount Union's fourth pick-six of the season in the win.
All three "starting" running backs and the starting quarterback ran for touchdowns as No. 7 St. Thomas rolled past Augsburg 57-25. Tucker Trettel, Jordan Roberts and Josh Parks combined for 167 yards and five touchdowns on 34 carries, whie Jacques Perra threw for 247 yards and a score and ran for 55 yards and two TDs. The Auggies ran for minus-27 yards as UST racked up 12 tackles for loss.
