Cambridge, MA --- The battle of the Engineers ended 25-21 in favor of MIT football in the season finale for both teams on Saturday night at Steinbrenner Stadium. The win sees MIT close the 2023 campaign at 4-5 overall, 3-4 in the NEWMAC, while WPI finishes at 3-7, 1-6.
WORCESTER -- The WPI football team saw its second-half comeback fall just short on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field, as Coast Guard held on for a 28-21 NEWMAC victory. The Engineers dip to 3-6 overall, 1-5 in conference play, while the Bears improve to 5-4, 3-3 in the NEWMAC.
WORCESTER -- After a first-half lead evaporated, the WPI football team tried a late fourth-quarter comeback, but the rally came up short as the Engineers fell 27-24 to visiting Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The loss dips WPI to 3-5 overall, 1-4 in NEWMAC play, while the Seahawks improve to 6-2, 4-1 in their first season in the NEWMAC.
WORCESTER -- A second-half turnaround led visiting Maritime over the WPI football team, 28-21, on Saturday on H.Carr Field at Alumni Stadium. The Privateers improved to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in their first season in NEWMAC play. The Engineers dip to 3-3, 1-2 in the conference.
Big news was made Saturday when Haley Van Voorhis took the field at safety for Shenandoah, but it turns out, Taylor Crout played at corner for Fitchburg State two weeks earlier, and WPI had a woman play wide receiver back in 2021.
Northfield, VT -- John Chau and Noah Herzig each registered a pair of touchdowns and Jimmy Espinal returned an interception for his first career score to help the WPI football team open the NEWMAC portion of its schedule with a 38-17 road win at Norwich on Saturday afternoon.
WORCESTER -- MIT jumped out to a 14-0 lead and held on for a 21-14 victory, as the WPI football team dropped its season finale at home on Saturday. The loss ends the Worcester Engineers’ season at 4-6 overall, 2-4 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers of Cambridge improve to 3-6 overall, 1-5 in conference action.
New London, CT --- A blocked field goal from Matt Guarneri and a one-yard touchdown run from Hunter Carey in the second overtime period sealed a wild win for the WPI football team on Saturday. The Engineers topped NEWMAC-rival Coast Guard on the road 30-24 in the penultimate game of the season for both teams.
WORCESTER -- A 90-yard Ryan Hannigan kickoff return touchdown sparked the WPI football team to a 20-15 win at home over visiting Norwich on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers improve to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC, while the Navigators dip to 3-6, 2-3 in conference play.
WORCESTER -- Graduate student Zachary Levy ran for a career-high 219 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries to power WPI over Coast Guard Academy, 38-6, in a NEWMAC tilt on Senior Day at Alumni Stadium Saturday.
Northfield, VT --- Senior quarterback Brendan Olexa threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-25 passing, and WPI pitched a defensive shutout for a 28-2 win at Norwich to claim its second victory of the season on a rainy Vermont Saturday afternoon.
WORCESTER -- Springfield football stayed undefeated in NEWMAC play, as the visiting Pride upended host WPI 46-17 on Saturday at Alumni Stadium. Springfield improves to 3-0 in the conference, 4-3 overall, while WPI stands at 1-5 overall, 0-3 in the NEWMAC.
Kings Point, NY --- WPI was stopped at 4th and goal from the one yard line with just over a minute left to play, as undefeated Merchant Marine held on for a 31-28 victory at home on Saturday afternoon in the NEWMAC opener for both teams.
The NEWMAC lost Maine Maritime from its conference for football when the school eliminated its football program, but the conference will return to one-fourth seafaring in the fall of 2023 when SUNY-Maritime takes that spot.
Scott Sperone, the defensive coordinator at WPI, will get his first head coaching position, as he'll replace Jim McGuire at the helm of Fitchburg State.
WORCESTER --- Senior Sean McAllen ran for 164 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries to be named MVP and lead WPI past Western Connecticut, 35-6, in a New England Bowl Series game at Alumni Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Northfield, VT --- Sean McAllen rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter and Connor Field added three rushing touchdowns of his own to set a new WPI single-season scoring record as WPI defeated host Norwich 70-28 Saturday to clinch a share of its first NEWMAC championship.
WORCESTER --- Sean McAllen and Connor Field combined to rush for 243 yards and five rushing touchdowns in the first half leading WPI to a 54-7 win over Coast Guard in a NEWMAC football contest Saturday afternoon.
Cambridge, MA --- Mark Wright drilled a 41-yard field goal on the final play of regulation to force overtime and Keithen Shepard pulled down a 23-yard TD pass in the back of the end zone in the second extra session to lift MIT to a thrilling 28-22 home win over previously-undefeated WPI on Saturday afternoon.
WPI senior linebacker Steve Mey has a lot more than the traditional student-athlete load on his plate. In addition to a challenging major and the daily grind of football practice, Mey spends a lot of time driving back to home to spend time with his mother, who has ALS.
WORCESTER -- Senior Julian Nyland threw for a career-high 332 yards, and senior running backs Connor Field and Sean McAllen each ran for 129 yards to power WPI past Merchant Marine 66-13 in a NEWMAC football contest played Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Washington, DC --- Quarterback Julian Nyland tossed three first quarter touchdowns and Connor Field ran for three touchdowns and caught a fourth score as undefeated WPI went on the road on and topped Catholic 52-24 in a NEWMAC football contest played Saturday afternoon in our nation’s capital.
WORCESTER -- Sean McAllen ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, and Mike McGoff notched a pair of sacks as the pair claimed Robert Pritchard Offensive and Defensive MVPs, as the Engineers overwhelmed the Mariners 51-20 during Homecoming Weekend.
WPI, Carnegie Mellon, Mass-Dartmouth and others all improved to 4-0, while Trinity (Texas) bounced back from a pair of losses to Top 10 teams and Misericordia won in quadruple overtime in Saturday's Division III football action.
Springfield, MA --- Connor Field ran for two scores and Julian Nyland tossed a pair of touchdown passes as WPI remained undefeated by going on the road and defeating host Springfield 35-21 in the NEWMAC football opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon. WPI, ranked first in the Grinold Chapter New England Division III Top 10, is now 4-0 for the eighth time in the program’s 130-year history and just the second time in 36 seasons. The victory over the Pride is just the third all-time in the 36-game series for Engineers. With the loss, Springfield is now 1-3 on the season.
Bangor, ME --- Sean McAllen rushed for three second quarter touchdowns as WPI football closed out its non-conference schedule Saturday afternoon with a 31-12 road triumph at Husson. The Engineers are now 3-0 for the first time since 2016 while the Eagles slip to 0-2 on the season.
