Westminster tops Waynesburg in opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Junior wide receiver Taite Beachy (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) hauled in six passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in Westminster College's 23-10 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Waynesburg University Saturday at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium. It was the Titans' first game this season after their Week 1 bye. 

Saturday marked Family Day on campus. The College also recognized its five newest members of the Titan Sports Hall of Fame at halftime: Kathy Travers Fehrs '85 (softball, tennis) of New Castle, Pa., Amy Dolsak '10 (basketball) of McDonald, Ohio, Ben Gutmann '10 (swimming & diving) of Alum Bank, Pa., Jenny Krueger '12 (cross country, track & field) of New Castle, Pa. and Matt Baurle '16 (swimming & diving) of Jeannette, Pa.

Waynesburg fell to 0-2 this season. Westminster improved to 10-1 in its last 11 league openers with the win and are riding a nine-game winning streak against the Yellow Jackets. 

Junior quarterback Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) was 17-of-19 passing for 213 yards and a score. He connected with Beachy on a 37-yard touchdown on his fourth throw of the game, four-and-a-half minutes into the first quarter. Beachy's score capped a nine-play, 89-yard drive. McGowan completed his first 12 passes of the game and also ran five times for 23 yards. He scored on an eight-yard rush midway through the fourth quarter.

Junior running backs Gavin Greaves (Miami, Fla., Felix Varela) and DeMere White (Manalapan, N.J., DePaul Catholic) combined to rush for 104 yards on 17 carries. Greaves finished with 62 yards on 10 carries and added a pair of catches for 29 yards while White added 42 yards on seven attempts. Sophomore wide receiver Clayton Cannon Jr. (Parkland, Fla., Marjory Stoneman Douglas) scored on a 13-yard rush five seconds into the second quarter that gave Westminster a 14-0 lead, capping the 15-play, 85-yard drive.

Westminster rolled up 404 offensive yards, passing for 213 and rushing for another 191, and finished 6-of-9 (.667) on third down conversions. 

Junior linebacker Dylan Sleva (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) paced Westminster's defense with 10 tackles (8 solo). Senior defensive back Corte Williams (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) added nine tackles (5 solo) and a tackle for loss while senior safety Brice Butler (Farrell, Pa., Farrell) finished with eight tackles (7 solo) and a tackle for loss. Junior linebacker Marcus Finkley (Youngstown, Ohio, Youngstown East) posted six tackles (3 solo) while senior defensive tackle Jean Garry Joseph (North Miami, Fla., Ebenezer Christian) finished with five tackles (1 solo), a sack and a fumble recovery. 

Freshman defensive back Cayetano West (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) and freshman linebacker Aiden Fletcher (Pittsburgh, Pa., Deer Lakes) had terrific debuts for Westminster. West registered three solo tackles while Fletcher had three tackles (2 solo), two sacks and a pair of forced fumbles. 

Zayne Cawley ran 22 times for 129 yards and a touchdown for Waynesburg. Trailing 14-0 early in the second, he ran five times for 40 yards on Waynesburg's first drive of the quarter, scoring on an 11-yard run to cut the deficit to seven. Carson Shriver added 45 yards on seven carries and had a 12-yard grab in the fourth. Samuel Barber completed 11-of-14 passes for 75 yards. Jemuel Cypress led Waynesburg defensively with 10 tackles (7 solo).

Freshman Andrew Caranna (Copley, Ohio, Revere), making his Westminster debut, drilled a 19-yard field goal with just over six minutes to go in the second quarter that gave the Titans a 17-7 lead. He made his first two extra-point attempts before having his third blocked midway through the fourth. 

Westminster will travel to Meadvile next Saturday to take on Allegheny College. Kickoff from Frank B. Fuhrer Field is slated for 7 p.m.
